Title: VSS looking different
Post by tlundkvi on Jun 22nd, 2009, 4:23pm
As I had obvious issues with my VSS, I got myself a new one. The picture of an identical one as sold by Ford is below. Was pointed out based on VIN.

But as I finally had time to replace it, it looked like this:

Obviously I would need to move the pin and the metal ring onto the threaded part of the new VSS. But what about the metal housing I'm holding at my fingertips, should this be moved too? There is a tube for the bolt on the new one but not on the old (there is a hook, but a hole besides it for the bolt).

Didn't want to disassemble the old one or attempt to move the parts from the old to the new unless 100% sure, to keep return option available, in case I have the "wrong" correct part.

Advice on this is much appreciated!

The part of putting the pinion to the new sensor is pretty clear. Might as well get a new pinion, although the old one didn't look too worn.

How can the outer part of the VSS look so different? (apparently my webhotel hosting the pics is not too reliable).

Went for an advisory visit to Ford. Their explanation was that my car had a Granada/ScorpioI VSS installed as mine is manufactured in november 1994. Probably true. The Ford app they used showed cross compatibility with a 4 other VSS with different finis, of which 3 had a technical number starting with 90G. Very interesting.

In my exhaust system, the front silencers have a 90- tech. number stamped on, and a 95- number on a red sticker besides it. So this would not be the first time :)

Can't you get Ford to match the part numbers ?  :)

Dont believe a word they say!! They are confusing the Granada and Scorpio :)

Never seen a Scorpio fitted with a VSS like that and i've changed a few, including one on an October 94 built 2.0 16v

The chances are yours is still the original VSS anyway.

And if its not original then WHY did someone change the VSS from what it had to what it has now?? ;)

Go ask them for a 24v thermostat and watch them trying to find it on the catalogue, you'll get a Granada one!  }{

In fairness to the parts guys though I think its the catalogue that is wrong/misleading

OK, I see. I didn't see how they did the cross-compatibility query, they might have done it badly. Anyway this is what the guy thought. For example, my seat memory switch says Made in West Germany, and I have Granada/Scorpio1 stamps on my exhaust, so to me it sounded reasonable.

To all fairness to the old part, the VSS has worked until now. If this is truly from another model it's good news for scorpio owners (perhaps). If it is OEM, then I probably have a one of a kind VSS. I will not throw it away when replaced. I quickly examined it, I didn't find a tech. number on it.

I just hope the gearbox is not from a "project", would the A4LDE from another model even be installable on the 24V? Gear switching and fuel economy is a nightmare when VSS is not in use (VSS signal is currently intermittent, but there is a 100% predictable pattern on how it will behave).

The site is a swedish breakers' association, but the message is pretty clear. The odd VSS IS from/the same as a Granada or Scorpio 1 2.9i from 1994.
