Title: Dismantling rear brake caliper Post by mijfife on Jun 30th, 2009, 8:12pm Hi all, I had to change a rear caliper today as the handbrake lever was starting to stick. Is it possible to remove the lever to free it off? I undid the return spring but the lever only lifts a bit before jamming and I didn't want to force anything, so how does it come apart then ??? ;) Cheers Jim |

Title: Re: Dismantling rear brake caliper Post by Snoopy on Jun 30th, 2009, 8:34pm The only way to get it apart is to DISMANTLE the whole caliper and then reassemble using new seals etc... I was hoping there were going to be some pictures of what it looked like from Harewood but unfortunately they did not materialize.. There are several members who report limited success with using the iol and movement method but patience is required and time. . There are several threads on here about it This is the last one http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1244880398 |

Title: Re: Dismantling rear brake caliper Post by Highlander on Jun 30th, 2009, 8:34pm Hi Jim, They do come apart but i dunno if its a good idea as they look difficult to put back together.. I have a dismantled one from Simmo, i'll take some pics and post them so you can see the set up. The arm wont lift out, there is a pin locking it in place so it cant come up too far.. I've always managed to get some WD40 into it and free them off, gently using a hammer if necessary until they free up. Beaten again!! by a Volvo driver!! ;D |

Title: Re: Dismantling rear brake caliper Post by mijfife on Jun 30th, 2009, 8:49pm Thanks for the quick reply guys :) Snoopy, I did a search on Callipers and nothing came up, didn't think to try handbrake ::) Highlander, the handbrake lever does move, it just isn't returning fully to the stops when released so it might respond to the oil and hammer treatment. I've got two working ones on the car just now (for a change!) but would like to free the one I took of for a spare so worth a try. thanks again for the help guys :) Cheers Jim |

Title: Re: Dismantling rear brake caliper Post by Highlander on Jun 30th, 2009, 8:53pm You should be ok then Jim. There is a rubber seal on the handbrake lever inside but it look like the shaft gets pitted and rusts which then results in the shaft siezing (usually in the on position) then it just doesnt return, if the caliper has been removed you should get on better as you can turn it upside down and let the rubbish run out it while you do it.. last one i did i spent half an hour on it but its working perfectly now |

Title: Re: Dismantling rear brake caliper Post by Simmo on Jun 30th, 2009, 9:46pm Jim, The 'Highlander method' does seem to have a modicum of success. It involves removing the bolt holding the shaft down so that the unit will lift up enough to drench it with WD40. It then needs to be both tapped down and turned numerous times in order to free it off. The problem is that even though you lift the shaft there is a seal at the top which is intended to stop dirt entering the unit but it does a pretty good job of stopping oil as well. With it off the car you should have a better chance of sorting it. Stuarts' pictures should help which is why I sent the unit to him to examine etc. Let us know how you get on. ;) Mike |

These 'awards' are only issued for a proven method so at the moment yours is 'provisional'. If you continue to be nice to Snoopy and get those photos posted who knows?? :D ;D. |
