Title: ABS sensor rings
Post by Tenfut on Jul 22nd, 2009, 10:58am
Hi guys

Does anyone have a step by step procedure for cleaning the ABS sensor rings, what to take off, tools needed etc. I have the 15 MPH light at the moment. I have already cleaned the sensor plugs. Doubtless it will turn out to be the ABS controller at fault, but I may as well do the "easy" bits first.

Any help most appreciated.

Tenfut

I have recently changed my ABS sensor on right-front wheel.
It'd be better if you can lift up the car.
But you also can turn the wheel at max and access sensor from the front (you can even try to push your head there :))

The ABS sensor ring is covered by a special cap. You can take it off by a falt screwdriver.

Under the cap you'll see the ring and the sensor (it's a left front wheel from the inside).

The sensor itself is held by a bolt (you need 10mm spanner or wrench to dismount it). Unfortuantely the sensor may be too hard to get out, but i'm not sure if it's needed for you

You can read about my problem here (with some pictures)

I't would be good to clean it with WD-40 to remove rust and then petrol to remove other dirt (but the roads in UK is much-much-much more cleaner than in Russia ;), so you may not need it), with using hard brush and air compressor:))

Strongly suggest you DO NOT even attempt to remove the front ABS sensors - you will more than likely end up damaging them....once in, they don't like being removed.

Common problem with the ABS controller is the power connections to the circuit board break but can be re-soldered - there is a feature on it somewhere on this site.

Mike is right! My ABS problem was caused by a broken soldering of pins in ABS module.
See here in pictures (sorry for quality, it's a mobile)

The article,by Tompion, who solved the problem, is HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/abscontrollerrepair.htm). The easy way to test the 'controller' is to remove the plug to the motor and apply 12v to it. If the motor runs then it's 99.9% a fault with the soldering on the pins. You will see that Tompion now only cuts a small circular hole....VERY CAREFULLY...in the cover above the pins. This is ,as has been said, because the cover is welded down and is very difficult to remove without more damage.
