Title: Windscreen washers.
Post by Simmo on Jul 26th, 2009, 3:54pm
I have had a problem recently with the washer jets not working correctly in that there was just enough force to get the water over the wiper blades!. I checked the jets themselves, the pipework etc and even changed the pump (thanks to Gozz). Yesterday I decided to replace the main supply pipe from the pump to the jets. Having removed the long section from the pump to the start of the jets I discovered that I could not blow through it. As I examined it I realised it was not one complete length but that about nine inches away from the pump there was a connector.Pulling the pipe off I found the long length was clear. However the short length, with the connector still attached was blocked. Pulling the plastic connector out I saw that, in fact it was a non return valve !, consisting of a spring with a tiny ball bearing. I replaced this with a standard straight connector, pressed the washer button and the water flew straight over the top of the car!!. Adjusted the jets and now all is working perfectly. Just thought this may help anyone with similar problems as previously I had checked for flow from the pump, through this pipe, and all appeared ok. Clearly the valve was defective and simply not allowing sufficient flow to reach the jets.  ;)

Obviously suffering from "age" and general failure and degradation !

( I refer to the washer piping and NOT the owner ! ;)  )
