Title: rusty sills (rocker panels)
Post by clive_tb on Jul 31st, 2009, 2:44pm
Is there anything special to know before I order parts and start cutting and welding? For instance, how is the rubber strip held on that runs the length of the doors? It looks like it just push fits into a recess but I don't want to just tug it to find out! Is there any wiring in the sills (unusual I know but this is an Ultima Estate - 2.9 12V - and they are pretty weird design in some places. Any help, advice or experiences very much appreciated.

the  rubber  strip is held on with little plastic push in pins ,when I put my new sills on this where I cut the old panel ,so after fitting the sills used the rubber strip to cover the join and paint line

Thanks for that -  there's always something to be gained from experience.

clive.
There are at least two drain tubes ino the sills from the sun roof trough,I presume you have one on the Ultima spec. The little plastic retainers, (Ford 1042065) will nearly all need to be replaced, when you remove the rubber strip they break.

JC.
The bottom of the doors shut onto it,I have had limos where they have been removed and the holes filled, presumably to reduce repair costs.Really they don't serve much of a useful purpose, but do cause corrosion on the top of the sills.

One of the rubber sill strips was missing on mine, replacing it reduced road noise on wet roads.
