Title: Rear Brake caliper
Post by Kenboy on Sep 10th, 2009, 7:00pm
Hi I have recently sourced rear brake caliper (Used) I assume the lever with the coiled attatched spring is part of the handbrake assembly my question is should I be able to move this lever as it seems pretty solid or do I assume it has siezed, your advice would be greatly appreciated.    (2.3 1997 saloon)

Cheers Kenboy

Yes, it should move freely, with the only resistance being from the return coil spring. You could try spraying it with WD40 etc to try & free it up, but if the rust has really taken hold inside, then you'll probably be trying in vain  :)

The way to deal with it is to slacken off the bolt holding the lever on to the caliper and lever up the arm a little whilst soaking it with WD40. Tap it down and repeat the process. If the bolt is fully removed you will have to re-fix the spring which can be a difficult job so go easy. The actual operating shaft inside the caliper cannot be pulled out and there is a seal at the top designed to stop water etc getting inside so it is very much hit and miss. Just persevere with the WD40, lift, twist and tap down. It does sometimes do the trick.  If HIGHLANDER is reading this those photos you promised would be a real help !!. ;D

Hi

Sorry to interrupt but everything you're saying here is fine for a while. To do this properly you need to take the caliper apart and rebuild it, basically it means cleaning it from rust and mud and changing the rubber elements. If you have a basic workshop it's not a big deal. The parts needed are still available in UK but if you can't get them they can be easily and cheaply sourced in Europe.
Or you can buy a new caliper, we still sell them in UK for something around 100£ a piece.

Hi thanks for that I sourced this from a guy who advertised on Ebay I did ask him to check for free movement on the handbrake lever and was assured all was ok, he was obviously telling a porkie,oh well some you lose some you win I will try and get my money back £20 but I do not hold to  much hope. as for the brake caliper that is in situ I managed to free it up and all is ok for the moment and my car has recently passed MOT.

Again thank you very much  Kemboy

Hi now that I own a useless caliper I have decide to dismantle it just as an experiment to see how it works, who knows it may just be servicable what I have done so far is to secure the brake lever spring with a couple of heavy duty tie wraps and then undone the 11mm nut that secures it, this way it is far easier to refit I have alrerady refitted once with not much of a problem this tip may come in handy if you should have a go yourself well thats it,so far and now I am hoping that you guys can take me through the rest of the procedure.

Ken. Have a read of THIS page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/brakesmanual.htm) and click on the Brake Caliper 'box' which will enlarge it. There you will see the relevant parts in exploded view. You have to remove the piston and access the parts that way. Only then will you be able to fully remove the 'shaft' which turns the handbrake. You will need a pair of strong long nose circlip pliers and BE CAREFULL, use safety specs, as things can fly!. HIGHLANDER has an old caliper which I dismantled and hopefully will put up some pictures which may help. ;)

That's the stage to be carefull as the circlips can fly. I'll chase Stuart re the photos. ;)
