Title: Searching for the leak Post by wolfblood on Sep 13th, 2009, 2:19pm Hi I have finally managed to get the car (24V) on some ramps and check underneath. The following is a photo of what I first saw. http://i869.photobucket.com/albums/ab259/wolfblood_photos/dripping1b.jpg link http://s869.photobucket.com/albums/ab259/wolfblood_photos/?action=view¤t=dripping1b.jpg At first I feared the liquid may be coming from the slot between the bell and the autobox which made me twitch a bit as the last time this happened it meant a new autobox for that particular scorpio. Once the engine was started however it became clear it was dripping from closer to the bonnet and falling under gravity then running on the casin of the bell before falling off When looking under the bonnet I cannot see any leaks from above although I have sofar only removed the cover and not the Octopus parts. Any advice appreciated. FYI the aircon is off as are the fans. The coolant in the system is diluted due to having to replace a burst top hose a couple of weeks back so I topped up with normal water as I couldn't find the same coolant. Was going to do a full coolant flush and transplant with fresh coolant at proper ratio when this leak started last week. Regards Dean |

Title: Re: Searching for the leak Post by scorpio_man on Sep 13th, 2009, 2:57pm hi there can you take another photo of the general area of the leak, zoomed out so we can see where abouts it is (hard to tell from your 1st photo). also, do a recap of how much water you're losing, over how many miles, etc, so members don't need to swap back and forth to your other post. hth |

Since I spotted the leak the car has been parked so milage/loss is a bit difficult am going to look under again this afternoon so may be able to give a better estimate.. Unfortunately I am on ramps so difficult to get wider angle but will see what can do but as a guidelie where it is labelled rear of the car is about where the fat end of the autobox is. Title: Re: Searching for the leak Post by Snoopy on Sep 13th, 2009, 4:52pm I have studied you picture very carefully and if I am correct the part above the two pipes is the starter motor. If that is correct then I would suspect either the hose that runs through the V of the block or the very back core plug. BUT could be the heater matrix feeds as well. Please tell us if that is correct it may well help others who have more knowledge of the 24 v than myself. |

Title: Re: Searching for the leak Post by wolfblood on Sep 22nd, 2009, 12:36pm Should have renamed it "always use the right tool for the right job" ala Mr Scott. Spent ages trying to find the leek to no avail with the engine running all could see was that coolant (or just water as it was by then after all the top ups) was coming out from somewhere. My mate turned up with a nifty tool that presurises the coolant system turned off the engine pumped up the pressure and within 10 seconds could see the water shooting out. The culprit was a small hole about 3/4 inch froom the engine on the hose going from the rear of the engine to the heater matrix. Luckily there was enough slack to cut back the hose beyond the hole and reattach. 2 weeks off the road waiting for time to check and access to ramps solved in a few minutes just using the correct tool. Will post pics when get a chance. As this is my second hose to develop a problem in the past few weeks I was thinking it may be time to replace them all but am finding it difficult to find new ones. Has anyone any experience using universal type silicon rubber hoses that I keep seeing advertised? Regards Dean |
