Title: Front wheel hub
Post by Tekno on Sep 22nd, 2009, 7:25pm
Hello

I'm going to change front wheel hub. Has anyone did that ? If you have good advices to give, please let me know.

I did read article about rear hub but more knowledge would be good.

Tekno.
I see in the other post that you have the complete hub and carrier, presumably you will change it complete rather than swopping bearings. Is the little socket broken for the ABS ?,shouldn't be too much of a problem though  :)

Yea I'll change whole hub to one with good bearing. Nothing wrong (except bearing) with old one but it's better to do that way because I have then another hub If something goes wrong (abs sensor brokes or something)..

Mine was dead easy - just remember to fully remove the bolt at the rear of the hub (srrut pinch bolt) or you'll be sat there wondering why the hub isn't coming down off the strut  :-[

Have some string handy to tie the caliper up out of the way.

I also soaked all the bolts in releasing agent the night before.

Screw an old nut on top of the track rod end after you undo the lock nut - then you can tap the old nut with a hammer to have the TRE fall out of the hub without damaging the thread on the TRE.  If you use a ball joint splitter you risk ripping the rubber gaiter.

Really is as easy as removing all the bolts you can see holing it on - no really "gotchas" to think of.

Detaching lower arm was tough job.. and nuts were in zillion newtonmetres.

Result of job:
- No any vibration in steering wheel....until I press brake pedal. But a lot less than before.
- Strange noise is gone
- Braking feels more effective
