I have a Brand-New 2.3 Engine. I can 99% say that it's straight from the factory. The engine number is stamped on the front and without giving the whole number away, it starts, HCA004 6XY01...... etc. It is definately NOT a Stolen or Dodgy item, and I don't really need it, or necessarily want to sell it. I got the engine 12 years ago for a kit-car that I built, but instead put a 2.8 German engine in it. (Spartan) I'm going to strip the engine down, and perhaps store a few bits for my own use if I need them, like the water pump, the rocker cover, the inlet manifold, and exhaust manifold, there are a lot of wee items! It may even be the wrong engine for the Scorpio? But many of the ancilliary bits look the same to my car engine. I have the engine block numbers, and the engine seems to have an injection system that has 'System VI' across the top? (not the same as mine) Also the cylinder head has 2.0 on the upper near-side? What I'm saying is, if anyone can give me info on the engine, and/or wants major bits, then speak to me. It's a manual gearbox engine, with a brand-new, (albeit surface rusty) full clutch and flywheel. Will a manual 'box engine, take an autobox? Obviously I'm not just going to start posting items away to people that want, but give me some info on the engine, or perhaps make me offers for the shell of it, or bits of it, or what-ever! It is a factory item, never used! It's not dodgy, and I'm not a complete idiot, I'm a college lecturer in mechanical engineering. I've built my own kit-car, and restored a few old vehicles without specialising in anything. This site is very helpfull, and I would like to help others on the site, I suppose that's why I've done this post, that as well as I'm a creepy Northern Scot that likes to freak-out would be visitors to the northern extremes, to lure them up here and kill them "by Scorpio" ;D

The "system VI" inlet and the 2.0 on the cylinder head point towards this being a 2.0 16v lump, not a 2300, but you could confirm this by seeing if anyone has access to "small feline" :) to confirm the engine block number - theres a possiblilty it could be a hybrid of a 2300 block and 2.0 head which makes a very nice engine indeed :)

Aha, so just because it does have the plastic cover on the top with 2300 16V, that doesn't mean it is that engine? Maybe I am a complete idiot! I think I'll just strip the engine and take a look at it, I must be able to salvage a few spares from it for future use if needs be. I'll definately be parting with bits if they won't fit my engine.

hi there

don't think it's much point in breaking it up for parts.

the things you might need are the head or the complete engine.

sensors are just about available, so no point taking them off just now.

IMO, best to keep as it is.

If it's a 2.3 it will be a very tall engine because there is a housing between the block and the sump containing a pair of contra rotating balance shafts driven by chain from the front of the crank.

Now see you's have got me wondering! I just measured this engine against mine, and it measures out exactly the same at 63cm from the bottom at the front to the top at the front on top of the rocker-box. Course I can't get to see the engine number on mine cause I'm not sure where it is!! Is there any definate difference between the 2.0 and the 2.3 that would tell for sure? The water-pump and thermostat housings look the same as do the switches on the side of the housing. The exhaust manifold is quite large with four bolt-holes.

As I said there is a large aluminium housing below the cast iron block containing the balance shafts.The 2.3 also has the infamous plastic inlet manifold and the cast iron exhaust manifold has eight studs to retain it.
Do you have the old Granada 2lt twin cam ,does it have a distributor type cap ?

The front face of the cylinder block on the 2.3 bellow the cylinder head looks sort of webbed where the 2.0 is flat

Aha, pictures a great help! Mine on the car is the same webbed front as the 2.3. The spare engine looks to be a mix. It has the flat front of the 2.0, but it has the same sump shape as the 2.3, hence the same measurement! My engine has 'type 805' on it, and was built in May 1997. My car was registered on the 1st of August 1998, but doesn't have the 'face-lift' lights. I suspect it sat in a showroom for a while. Does much interchange on the engines? The spare engine has the exhaust and inlet on it, aye, a plastic inlet and an exhaust that looks like the 2.0 one in the picture above.

Doesn't the 2.0 litre head have '20' cast into it on the side?
