Hi all, just had car in for mot tonight, all good but failed on emissions, Co2 was reading 59 on the analyser, max should be 20 for the 2.0l 16v, all other readings were good, ie; lamda etc, am I correct in assuming that the catalytic convertor has had it and its time to bite the bullet and buy a new one. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Bikerdon.

I think you should have the car ODB scanned. Are you sure you copied the results right? CO2 is a percentage. Can you check again on your report, how was the HC, and exact value of Lambda.

Hi again, it was a really rubbish printout but here is what I could make out on it;

IDLE TEST.
Co? 0.72%. FAIL. max allowed is 0.30%.
Co? 17ppm. PASS. max allowed is 200.
Lambda. 0.99. PASS. max allowed is 1.09

FAST IDLE TEST.
Co? 0.60%. FAIL. max allowed is 0.30%.
Co? 15ppm. PASS. max allowed is 200.
Lambda 0.99. PASS. max allowed is 10.9.

Looks like a problem somewhere in the engine sensors, if HC is at 15ppm it's like with new cats. The car runs too rich, but cat keeps HC down. You should scan it for troubles. Injection temp sensor is one bet, vacuum lines another, could even be slow lambda sensors. But not the cat I believe, HC should be skyrocketing if they were bad.

that ford cat i gave you was only a few months old when i got it from Stuart. doubt that will be your issue.

if you want another scan done (i don't use VE now, but my new gear should work ok), i'm around Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

How hot was the engine, have you given it the italian tuneup, rev the b---s off it.  I had the same problem with a mazda mx3 v6, but the mot man tried to find a rev it would pass at and fool the equipment, but after half an hour of trying it just sudenly dropped to a pass level.  How do you use the car , lots of short trips?.

Hi again all, well it was the cat after all, replaced with an aftermarket one and all is well once again, another years ticket now on the car. scorpio_man I was surprised about the cat too, visually when I removed it all seemed good, no obvious damage to the ceramic bricks either. I also double checked the connectors to the sensors, all hoses, and the EGR system for leaks, all were good. Had my local garage check the emissions after I had checked the hoses and connectors etc and Co levels were still way up, changed the cat, had them checked again and all was ok.

Did they also scan it, low HC does not indicate bad cats? I had 20ppm with brand new cats!

The Co levels were the problem not the HC, Co levels would not go below 0.60%, pass level is 0.20%.

i wonder if cats can go 'off'? :-/ it was lying about my shed for a good few years.

I know that CO not HC was the problem, elevated CO can be due to many reasons, etc. fuel running too rich, a sensor is bad etc. If the cat was non-functional, it should be seen as a high HC as well. My point is, with a fresh cat, it may be able to kill the excess HC at first, but the same might be faced again. After all, scorpio_man said it was almost new.  A proper scan would have revealed a problem with the fuelling or sensors if there were any. Anyway, good that it sorted out!
