Title: 5000 RDS and 7000 RDS
Post by Tekno on Nov 3rd, 2009, 10:39am
What are differences between those?

I have broken 7000 and want to repair it.. But if it's nearly same as 5000 then it's not worth it.

Fed up with no display so fitted 5000 and it has been perfect, as a personal thing I am more than happy with it. ;D

I agree with Matt. The difference in sound quality between a 5 & 7000 is miles apart. Such a shame the displays are so bad on 7000 units. Really not a bad quality stereo at all  :'(

they are diffrent to, the 5000 has a lcd pressed onto conductive rubber, the 7000 uses a soldered ribbon cable

Hi, I too have display troubles with the 7000.    I`m reluctant to change it as it works well, but the lack of info is a nuisance.  Does anyone know what actually goes wrong with the display  i.e. Is it a general breakdown of the unit through age,  ( is there any age limit regarding the life of the display).
Is it possible to get the display panel repaired/replaced? as  I fear a modern replacement unit complete would be pricey, and would not necessarily match the car interior, which is still original.
Any suggestions?  cheers Fred

its normally damp that causes it, sticking the unit in a warm airing cupboard for a few days can bring them back, if not a strip and clean can also work

Hi Matt,  Thanks for the reply. You could be right as regards dampness.  The old girl spends her life in the garage, and I only tend to do short trips, so she never gets a chance to really warm up.
I`ll take the unit out later today and give it a warm up.  I`ll let you know the outcome in a week or so.   Thanks Fred

Somebody not too long ago managed to take the front off a 7000 and cleaned the contacts up.  I believe that he ran through the proceedure fully either here or on Simplelists.

I have to rush off out now but I will have a search about in my emails etc. for the info.

I believe the job was quite easy but needed care.

Mike :)

Hi, While the unit is out and is presently basking in the warmth of the airing cupboard, I might as well dismantle it and see if there are any dirty contacts or anything else apparent.  Any tips as to how to proceed on this?
I notice in a more recent post (Jonnycab) that he favours the "freeze" method, so at the moment I`m not too sure which way to go. :-/
cheers fred.

You need T8 Torx and open basically every screw you see.

Update:  After being in the heat for a few days I tried it out in the car.  No joy at all, just a green screen.
Decided on a strip down which was surprisingly easy,  just remove 6 no:8 torx screws  and lift the plastic lugs away from the retaining pins on the sides of the unit, and disconnect two ribbon connectors.  First problem after this was that to dismantle the facia further you need an even smaller torx bit (prob a no6) which I didnt have, so I wrapped the fascia complete in a plastic bag (as per Jonnycabs tip) and put it in the freezer.  I checked the connectors, and they looked as good as new, so if freezing the display doesnt cure the problem then its search for another 7000 unit, as I dont hold out much hope of getting another display unit. I intend to keep the part in the freezer for 24 hours, then try it again.  Will keep you posted. cheers Fred.

Btw.

Does 6000 and 7000 have about same sound quality ?

Update:  Sadly it looks like the display has finally given up the ghost. I`ve been through all the suggestions with no luck at all, and because the screen is blank its pretty well impossible to set up the codes etc.
Does anyone know of a later ford replacement to fit the existing aperture and connections ? (or any make will do) cheers fred :'(

Got to admit I am very pleased I fitted a 5000 in place of my dead 7000, the 7000 never impressed me with fading display and easily lost signal.  None of these problesm with 5000 YET!!!! and as for sound quality I am ore than hapy with it.. As always it is a personal thing though.

Hi, Is the 5000 unit compatible with the existing dash aperture / cd player / steering column remote and electrical connections as is the 7000 unit?
I`m not too worried about sound quality as I mostly listen to radio broadcasts, but I`d like to keep the original speaker setup.  Any info? thanks fred.

I have to disagree about this. Just installed 5000 and it sounds as good as 7000. I'm using XCarlink for listening mp3 through USB.

Don't know if tapes sound worse but who listens them anyway  ;D

Was great buy for 10€ ( £7 )

Hi Folks,  Spent most of last week hunting for a replacement unit.    Loads on EBay, but the auctions are a waste of time IMHO.      Finally decided on a "buy now" 6000 RDS unit in walnut finish.  Ordered last Weds evening, and the item arrived Friday at 7:30 am.    Nice unit, it was up and running within 15 minutes, and I`m well pleased.
Its nice to be able to pop a CD into the unit instead of loading up the changer in the boot.  Definitely an improvement on my old 7000 unit.  I cant remember ever using the cassette facility on the 7000 anyway.
Cheers  Fred.  :)
