Title: Viscous LSD
Post by phillpot on Dec 1st, 2009, 8:06pm
Hi, recently got hold of one of these to fit to my TVR but struggling to find any info about them from basics like what oil to use to some sort of description of how they work  ???

Any advice gratefully received !

Mike.

Wrong site mate - Scorpios never had LSD's, just traction control on the Cossies (and as an option on others).

I think you'll be better posting on a Granada site.

I disagree, Ford lists LSD's for the Scorpio II as a replacement part alongside the regular ones, in all ratios, but unsure if they can be ordered. Even my handbook says an LSD can be fitted at Ford.

I guess this is one of the Scorpio 1st style of original equipment that is on the border of being legendary.

Hi Mike, welcome to the site :)

Which LSD did you get, do you know what car it came from?

As stated above the Scorpio wasnt fitted with a LSD as standard however it WAS available as an option, although in I have never seen or heard of one which had it fitted.

http://www.granada-and-scorpio-online.com/

You may get more help on that site but there are a few members on this site who have Granadas/Sierras which were fitted with LSD and may be able to help, i have a Sierra 4x4 with LSD and am currently fitting Sierra 4x4 running gear to a Scorpio ;)

This site also has a lot of very knowledgeable guys who deal with the older Sierra/Capri stuff fitted with LSD's

Bought this thing off Ebay, described as Granada/scorpio 7.5 inch 100mm drive flange LSD.
I understood, maybe wrongly, that early Scorpio 2.9's were fitted with these prior to the introduction of traction control (around '94 ?)

Anyway, not a problem, I'll toodle off to the Granada site see if they can help ! ;)

sounds like a Mk3 granada cossie diff to me - as you stated, its a viscous system - these rely on the shear tensions of the viscosity of the diff oil to work as opposed to a "plate" system that works like a clutch (found in the old Mk2 capri diffs).  There is a third type, known as a "torsen diff" which uses a complex system of cogs and gears to provide the locking effect - you'd need an audi or an RS Focus to find these tho  :)

Cant remember offhand what the oil required is, but a quick google should sort you out :)

The "Early" Scorpios are Granada Scorpio's

The Scorpio (our cars) came out in late 94 and were produced up until 98.

Its confusing I know, BLAME FORD! :)
To make it worse, the earlier Granada Scorpio -94 was called the Scorpio 1 in Europe and the 94- Scorpio was called the Scorpio 2

Yup - our scorpios had 2.9i 12v's :-)  Until they were phased out ('97 I think).

p.s. on ebay did the guy say it was a Scorpio?

I saw a "Scorpio" 24v LSD diff for sale recently and the guy was adamant it came off a 94- Scorpio.

the Scorpio 2.9 and diesel diffs have 108mm drive flanges.

the 8v's and 16v's use 100mm

The Granada 24v must have used 100mm then?

Ok, checked back to the ad and was actually described as "Ford Granada/Cosworth LSD"

Think I got the Scorpio bit from some info on a TVR chat forum which had been reproduced from a Sierra forum !

"Most BUT not all24v Cosworth Granada/Scorpio (upto approx '94) are LSD after that they are 'open' type because theScorpio had traction control"

At the end of the day I think me and maybe one or two others have been confusing our  Granadas with Granada Scorpios and  proper Scorpios plus the normal 12v and Cosworth 24v  permutations ! :-[

Its not hard to do, you'd be amazed how many people who have owned a 94-  Scorpio for years and years put it up for sale on ebay as a Granada!  ;D

And yes the 2.9 24v Cosworth engine comes in two different versions, the Granada (BOA) and the Scorpio (BOB)

I should have stuck with the Fiestas!!  ;D
