Hi everyone, my scorp has developed a problem over the christmas holiday.
Every time i turn a corner or go round a bend there is a load banging from the n/s/r.
I have checked the wheel for any looseness and crawled underneath but cant find anything broken or loose....... any one got any ideas?
Car is a scorpio ultima 2.0 lt estate '96

Have you checked springs, shock absorbers (esp. bushes) and stabilizer bar linkages?

Is it a rotational periodic type banging,or just the exhaust ?

Sounds like it could be the constant velocity joint. Had similar on mine. ;)

If it is NOT the CV joint then most likely it is the wheel bearing .. They do not always have the symptoms associated with a failed bearing as I found out to my cost along with others .

A regular 'clonk-clonk-clonk' would almost certainly be a CV joint.

Done a few on my Mk2 Grannies...easy enough to do.

I think the most likely would be the CV joint as i have recently fitted a new bearing on the n/s/r and am pretty sure thats ok. Funny that it only bangs when cornering though. I will have a closer look when the rain stops.

Did you make sure that the bearing was torqued to the correct 200ft/lbs?. and did you re check the torque after a couple of hundred miles??. Failure on either count could be the answer.

Thanks for the reminder simmo, just checked torque, all ok so i think it must be the cv joint. Planning to get it off over the next couple of days...... watch this space.

Hi all, Just an update. Replaced inner & outer cv joints on near side, outer was completly shot and fell appart as i took it off, But..... as i lifted car I noticed the wheel on the N/S/R moved, I shook the wheel and the bearing has gone again, this is the third time in a year. I have replaced the bearing, hub, nut and washer over the past year, what more can i do?????? I am at the end of my teather with this. After Simmo's reminder i did check torque prior to starting CV joints and the nut was def at 200lb/ft. I dont know how to get over this problem... any help would be greatly recieved

Sorry to hear of your wheel bearing woes - I've done my near n/s wheel bearing twice in 2 years now.
2nd time it went the hub was wrecked - bearing had broken up and there were bits chewed out of it. Lucky I had a spare in the shed ;D

What brand of bearings are you using ?

I would be inclined to source a complete s/h rear hub assembly - stub axle, hub & bearing carrier and fit that.

I think the bits are the same for a Sierra with rear disc brakes which may help your search - maybe someone can confirm ?

Thanks for the reply Scorpio_Mike, I dont know what make the latest bearing was as i put the car in to a local garage because i thought I might be fitting something wrongly with my ancient tools. The previouse two were fron a local factor.
I think I need to look for a complete hub assembly, as you suggest, and will scour EBAY later.
