Title: Fuel economy 2.3L
Post by Robzere31 on Jan 18th, 2010, 9:15pm
Quick question,

Do you think if driven sensibly, a 2.3 scorpio estate (auto) would do mid 30's to the gallon?
Most of my daily commute is motorway & I'm currently getting around 35-38mpg from my 2.5 diesel,
but I'm looking at a 2.3 petrol which I've seen for sale.

Looks a sound motor, same year as mine but with 98K less on the clock  :P

My 2.3 auto estate does around 22mpg on local journeys nearly all under 10 miles with a fair bit of in-town driving and short runs to the shops.
Best I've got was about 34mpg on a 400 mile round trip to Bristol, mainly motorway, driven sensibly.
Managed about 28mpg on a 500 mile round trip towing a large car trailer.

Nope, realistically you won't get above 30 mpg.   I get an overall 27, but that is taken over a few tank loads.   Push it a bit harder than usual, and the fuel does drop fairly.   I have had a tankfull only give me 23, and I thought I was driving reasonably carefully.   Best I've had on a journey of 800 miles is 31, and that was sitting at the usual speed limits plus 10%, even then, that was before I discovered that at 80 mph mine is only doing 75 according to sat-nav.   Mines an Automatic mind!

Mmm....not good news.
Suprised really though, as my old 3L 24v Senator B used to do 30+ mpg on a run.  ???

Hi Rob. TBH Scorpios arent the most economical of cars whatever the model. If it's economy your after, then i would stick with the diesel. Im certainly thinking of getting one as my average of 19.8 mpg for my daily commute is begining to hit my wallet hard  :'(. As much as i love my Cossie ( & i truly do love it ) i,ve got to start thinking with my head & not my heart  :-/

hi there

the answer is to get one that's converted to lpg.

if you find a ultra low mileage/excellent nick one, then get it converted, but i don't think it's worth while now.

with my old one, i could get 19mpg around town and 28mpg on a run.

lpg was about 55p a litre! big savings.

my mondeo is doing about 26mpg on it's 5 mile round trip to work now (just gets warm, i really should stop taking it), but on a 450 mile trip last summer i was getting nearly 40 to the gallon.

Thanks guys.
Looks like I'll be sticking with the diesel for now.

Pity as the 2.3 is in good condition, but doing 300 miles a week to work would be a bit of a hit wallet wise.
