Title: Popped a core plug
Post by dml316 on Jan 24th, 2010, 7:58pm
Hi all - some general advice needed!

I got caught short during the icy conditions, and without the full antifreeze mixture, my block froze and popped a core plug - so leaks all it's coolant!
I can see the hole, and I have the core plug that came out...but not sure how easy it'll be to get a replacement in there - not a lot of space to get a mallet!
Has anybody else tried replacing a core plug in situ?  It's one of the ones on the left bank - bellhousing one seems not to be leaking.
Otherwise, what kind of costs should I be expecting from a garage for this type of repair?

Thanks all

Darren

Ooops  :-[
Had a core plug pop on my Sierra V6 a long time ago - side of the block, under the exhaust manifold. Cologne block so similar to your engine.
You MIGHT just manage to do it if you remove the exhaust manifold and anything else in the way - probably a lot more than on a Sierra - but it does rather sound like an 'engine out' job  >:(
Use a new core plug - DON'T be tempted to pop the old one back in - they cost pennies, so that would be a false economy. You wouldn't want to have to do it all again  :o

I'm not really sure which of them you mean, but removing  core plugs is not too uncommon in the Nordic countries when you install block heaters (far worse to put in). For the BOB it's the one closest to the air filter which is the most accessible, yours may be much worse. Have you tried looking at it from under the engine?
