Title: Sills
Post by Jonnycab on Feb 6th, 2010, 4:06am
Took the old girl for an MOT on Thursday & it failed....the first time ever !!  :-[

She went in looking great & came out with 3 holes in the N/S sill & 1 hole in the O/S sill  ???

"Those outer sills will have to be replaced or welded up mate" was the testers comment....

They didn't look that bad when I took it in, just a bit of paint bubbling....I've seen worse  ???....although, I think the MOT guy (new employee at the local garage) was being a bit overzealous in his testing methods (also failed it on one number plate bulb not being as bright as the other), & I suspect he was a bit brutal with the sills & used more than just his fingers to produce holes in them  :-/....but I suppose where there is rust, there is weakness.

I've been given a quote of £150 to weld them up (guy assures me it will be a neat job), treat any other rust along the sill bottoms etc & give the lower parts of the sills a good lick of black stone chip paint (I'll have to spray them up 'Mid Atlantic Blue' again when I get a chance).

But, just out of interest, could anyone advise on the average cost of having both sills replaced with new  :)

Had my sills replaced (Outers) about a year ago, if you are going to keep the car then my advice is to replace them rather than patch them up, you will have to source Mk3 Granada Sills that only require slight modification, they are about £14 each and I would advise to shop around for quotes as they vary so much but realistacly look to about £250.to £450 which includes respray I have to say mine did not fail MOT wise so I had the time to source different quotes. Should you require further info on this one then I will try to help but good luck.

Yep, pattern MK3 Granada sills are what I purchased for £26 each.
I think the quote I had for a genuine scorpio sill from Ford was £115 each  ::)

Fitting was £100 each side for me plus a few quid for painting.

JC.
Sometimes when I buy a limo from an auction, holes can be poked in the sills. To me this is not a major problem,it's not as if they are rotten from end to end.The damage is virtually always from the outside in ie an untreated scab. The original sills on the Scorp,as you will know, have that silly sealant over the join at the bottom, once the rust gets under that, it creeps quietly away unseen, causing a problem, the best thing to do with that stuff is take it all off, derust and paint then drill a couple of 13mm holes in the sill fairly low down to inject Waxoyl, closing the holes with blanking grommets.
As a fleet operator I,by necessity, have a fully equipped workshop,so for me to cut out the rot, plate skim and paint is no problem and costs very little. If you entrust the job to your £150 man,you should get easily another five years out of that job, that course could well be your best bet.Simmo had a lot of work done on his estate, including new sills and a lot of paint, but it cost him more than £150.
                                  Good luck
                                    GOZZ.

Holes in the cills are advisable and not fail items unless they are close to structural parts of the body and may deem to cause weakness

There is a hole either side, close to the seat belt anchors & the other holes are close to the N/S subframe mount.

I think for the time being I'm gonna have to go for the patch up job 'cos, although the old MOT still has 3 weeks to run, the car has a council (taxi) test on Tuesday week, so I don't have too much time.

I'll have to keep an eye on it after this & if it starts to rot elsewhere, then I'll have to consider having new sills put on.

Thanks for the advice guys  :)

Welding done & I must say....WOW!!!........this guy is good & obviously takes pride in his work !!!....

.........You can hardly see the welds  8)....extremely flush & very neat  :D

It looks like the bottom half of the sills have just been over-coated with black stone chip paint  :)

MOT for another year  :D.....but another MOT style test by the council next Tuesday to see if it's fit to retain it's local Hackney Carriage plate....I'm confident it will pass  ;)
