Title: Maybee diff ?
Post by Tons_of_fun on Mar 9th, 2010, 7:37am
Hi all. A few posts ago i mentioned that Matt & I's 'project' car thumps as it goes into gear when slowing down  :-/. After flicking through the reciepts that came with the car & the condition of the oil we are ruling out gearbox wear ( gearbox has been regulary serviced ). Ssssoooo..... I was wondering if it could be diff related ? ? There is a slight leak to the diff & was wondering if low oil in the diff would give me symptoms like those described. I dosent seem to thump as much when cold but becomes more pronounced when everything is up to temprature. Any suggestions / advice is greatly appreciated... Cheers... Craig  :)

Not a bad idea that. Thanks Stuart. The car is in Matts posession at the moment ( going to the isle of white ) so will send him a txt tonight. Dont want a cv failing on him  :-/ ::)

To be honest i've only heard of one diff failing on a Scorpio, one that Python9 had and I believe that was caused by SEVERE abuse!

24v + one teenager + wheelspin = broken diff   }{

I think it could be the diff.   Depending on the miles, and how long it's been weeping.   It might also tie-in with the oil getting warmer and so the viscosity being thinner leading to less 'cushioning' from the oil.   Maybe try putting fresh oil in the diff and see if it's any better?

They do occasionally suffer from noisy pinion bearings,but this will not produce backlash.As Highlander suggests worn CV joints will,but they get very clackety clack long before total failure.

Thanks fellas.  Much appreciated  :). Well as we speak the car is on its way down to the isle of white ( have a nice holiday Matt ), so fingers crossed it wont throw any wobblys while he is away  ::). Im thinking i may of been a bit hasty ruling the gearbox out, as when Matt checked the cv's he recons they are ok  :-/. I suppose an oil & filter change wont hurt  :)

Make sure that the Autobox fluid is up to the Max mark, Craig.  One of my Cossies from cold started to hang on to 1st. just a bit too long and then seemed to drop out of gear for a heartbeat then just fine and no probs till the next freezing morning (-7c.).  I checked the Autobox level and it was down just a bit,1/4inch maybe.  I topped up with a ltr. and all is fine and dandy once more.  I may have a slight leak/weep of fluid somewhere but it is far too cold to look just now.
