Title: heavy fuel consumption
Post by Ewing1 on Mar 14th, 2010, 11:00am
Hi everyone. Its freezing here and my scorpio (2,0 16v estate) is freezing too. it seems to be using twice the amount of gas suddenly.

also when i turn the key all instruments flip all the way up to max but then returns to normal. However the counter is reset (not on mileage though) which is annoying as Im trying to keep track of the fuel consumption. Any advice will be most appreciated.

best regards
Ewing1

The flicking needles & counter resetting is usually a sign that the battery is weak  :)

Yep. The battery is the first thing i would check as well. Flicking needles is the first sighn of a dying battery, closley followed by being late for work  :) ;) ;D. As for your fuel consumption, cold weather has quite a dramatic effect on the fuel you use. With the recent snow we have had here i have seen my average consumption fall from 20 mpg to around 16  :(. I should imagine most of the fuel is used when the car is running with the heater, heated screens & seats at full blast while im scraping ice  ::). Now the weather has warmed up slightly im back up to 20 mpg  ;D ;D ;D. There is also another theory that cold air is less dence than warm, so produces a faster burn, which in turn will use more fuel....Or something like that. HTH..... Craig  :)

Think you have that the wrong way round Craig ;)

(Extract from Wikianswers)

Quote:
Why is cold air more dense than warm air? Answer, Heat exites atoms and causes them to occupy more volume in space.

I also know this is true as I'm always feeling cold, therefore I must be dence (or is that dunce)  }{

Yep, Rod is right and cold air is harder to move through, so you burn more fuel.

hi. Thanks a lot for the advice. it is most helpful. Also I must say that still when I compare my scorpio even with a large mercedes or bmw I still prefer the scorpio. Its a true classic.
