Title: Changing autobox oil
Post by tonyboy on Mar 26th, 2010, 10:41pm
Hello, I'm going to change my gearbox oil in a couple of weeks, and just been reading about it, and is it necesary to take off the oil cooler hoses to change the oil, also whats the best ATF to use. I went over to our
local ford dealers and asked how much a gasket, filter and O' rings would cost, he tapped on his computer, and i could see the  ??? above his head, then he told me to go to the parts dept. I asked the man the same thing... tap, tap, tap, on his computer, then he came back and asked me again what i wanted, then he printed out a diagram of the gearbox and i had to show him what i wanted. Anyway he quoted me £48 for the set..........

Detaching oil cooler hose is necessary, and easy.

If you contact trevor Porter at ford parts uk and give him your VIN number or reg number he will supply the correct parts for you.

The correct oil is Mercon V or Dexron III with Lubegard Mercon V additive. I was told the difference is very small with or without the additive, some enhanced lubrication it offered.

Hi guys,

I'm going to exchange the oil also soon.
I saw on my '97 Cossie that both exhaust pipes are going straight below the autobox.
do i need to remove them to remove the oilsump? or is it enough to lower the exhaust by hanging it out of its rubbers?

Anyone had experience with Ravenol Mercon V? It is quite cheap and matches the Ford Spec? Everybody around me tells me only use original Oil!

Use Whatever Oil you want to as long as its Dextron III or better spec, thats all a load of bull "only use yatta yatta oil" lol !!

Don't need to drop the exhaust, pan will come off with a wiggle and a twist (the pan not you) lol.

Dropping the cooler unions drains out half of the converter and also the oil cooler if you blow them thru, just means you are exchanging more fluid, but you'll still have half a converter full and a valve block full of old oil, so you're only really adding half new oil to half old oil unless you strip it all down !!

It's the filter replacement that can make the biggest difference, but just be aware that if your box is already giving you problems your probably wasting yr money, cos an oil and filter change won't cure worn out bits.

However it is good preventative maintenance if your gearbox is driving okay and the car has done a few miles.

Additives such as "Lube Guard" are a good idea as most contain teflon and can help slightly sticky valves etc.

Hi Dave, thanks for the quick answer.

so i'll stick to ravenol mercon V, allright

i dont have any probs with the autobox for now and the oil looks nice red and does not smell worn. but after 13 yrs and 120.000 km (85.000 miles?) i think its time for an exchange...

i've planned to do it as follows:

- 2 oil-exchanges "from top" (with an oil-pump through dipstick) and then cycling one or 2 times to all drive-positions while engine is running idle.

- do a 3rd oil-exhcange with pan + filter. if i get 4liters out of it in each cycle i would expect that i replace a whole bunch of oil and do not have to touch the cooling-hoses.

where do you open the hoses? at the autobox or near the cooler?

greetings
 Torsten

Tekno proposed this method, actually many others use it in garages as well:

I took down the sump and changed the filter, refilled and took off the oil cooler pipe, I think its the bottem one, started the engine and pumped out app 2 ltrs, topped up and kept doing this untill clean oil came out.I think most, if not all was changed using this method as it comes through the cooler as well.

i think i'll also use the coolerhoses, seems the way to go :-) which one of the connectors on the cooler is the way back to the autobox?

I think the bottom hose goes into the the cooler and the top hose out of the cooler, When i did mine i took the bottom hose off and the oil came out when i started the engine.........

Hi.. thanks for the answer.

So what did you do to remove the Pan? just removing the 18 bolts of the pan and remove it?

Not sure wot model you've got but afaik 24V is the only one that needs both lambdas removing.

You must unplug them, then you'll find the correct size ring spanner will slip over the plug and they will undo.

Don't try using open ender or adjustable as it will slip and round 'em off, they are very tight.

A decent ring spanner works every time.

Cheers Dave

In my 2.9, the 'box was shot after 96,000 miles. Oil had never been changed. Although the car was only 4 years old, the oil should have been replaced, no doubt. Also locking it in a lower gear once it starts to slip out of lock going uphill is a lifesaver, I'm sure - having it constantly going in and out of lock or up and down a gear cannot be good.

I replaced the oil every 20,000 miles on my replacement box. Although not cheap, I found it to be much cheaper than the £3200 the repair cost me back in 1999.
