Title: Removing tensioner valve?
Post by tlundkvi on Apr 12th, 2010, 11:30am
Hi all,

I've run out of easy, non-invasive tricks to replace the tensioner valve.

A crosscut of the tensioner is more or less like this (not in proportion) :

It kind of looks like that you could get something similar to an allen key into the oil chamber via the side blanking plug. Tried it, but it's really stuck. I thought of drilling the opening on the valve slightly bigger and pull it out with a screw. I also thought of putting it in the freezer in hope of loosing it up a bit. Why on earth did they have to put the second blanking plug on the side for :(.

Does anybody know of a good tool/trick for this, before I start drilling it out?

get it hot, they tend to have a locking agent on them to stop vibrations making them lose,

blow torch or better an oxy acetylene touch, get it glowing but dont melt it !

Another way is to fill it with grease and where the plunger goes get a rod or anything that is a good fit and give it a hit with a hammer, this should hydralic it out.  Did you buy the plunger and valve off ebay, I have a kit to fit sometime, keep me informed how you get on.

Hi, thanks for the trick, never thought of that, although the figure shows the core principle :). I haven't had the time to try Matt's trick yet either, if it's glued with threadlock it probably has to be heated anyway. But with this approach there could ofcourse be a possibility the valve is leaking.

Yes, I bought the kit on ebay, both plungers + 2 valves. I also got hold of an old used one (the middle) to practice on. The good thing is the body is fully serviceable. I was BTW told by Burton these were the latest developments of Cosworth, so the kit should uprate the tensioners to later spec.

It's BTW very strange that parts that were supposed to be obsolete two years ago now turn up on ebay etc. :)
