Title: Faulty warning buzzer on auto box.
Post by tricky_dicky on Apr 22nd, 2010, 11:29am
If you leave the car in gear (auto box) and take the key out you get a warning noise, mine has packed up and constantly wails at me. This happened when I was 560 miles from home so I called the AA. The patrol man unplugged a black box under the steering column and the wailing stopped (along with the intermittent wipers, headlight on warning and I suppose all the other warning beeps) he said I should consult an auto electrician asap. Has anyone here got any advice on what may have failed i.e. switch on gear lever, black box or ignition barrel ? Also is it safe to just leave it unplugged, there are a lot of wires on the plug for just a warning buzzer?

Does it happen if you leave it in N instead of P?

might just be the switch

Check fuse 36 - power saver - in the auxiliary fusebox

It happens as soon as you press the button on the side of the gear selector. I'll  have to check if it does it in N, but I think it does it in all gears.

tricky -----.
I have cut the relevant wire on all my funeral vehicles where it goes into that black box which is the central timer module, bloody nuisance !!!
If you do it,hold the plug facing you with the extension piece at the bottom and cut the little ratchet strap holding the two halves together. The extreme right hand wire on the top row is the one, usually orange a green but sometimes orange and yellow, there are various similar coloured wires, but the top right hand is the one.

Thanks Gozz just done that. The annoying whining noise has gone and everything else works OK. Now where are the orange and yellow wires on the children?
