Title: Ford engines and gearboxes
Post by pat on May 5th, 2010, 11:12am
Hi guys. Some time ago I seem to remember somebody on the forum saying that all Ford 4 cyl engines were all compatible with 4 cyl type gearboxes. (Same for 6 cyl).
Specifically what I want to know is would a Pinto gearbox fit a 1.8 turbo diesel? Can anybody help please?
I hope the powers that be do not mind me asking a non-Scorp question. I've bought another P100 with what sounds like a gearbox whine and may need to look for another box if repairs are going to be expensive.

Update. I have just been on a site called Old Skool Fords and a thread on there covers it.It is apparently a type 9 box and fits just about everything - including the 1.8 td. At worst I might have to change the bellhousing.

a type 9 isnt as strong as a MT75 box, but the type 9 is easier when changing bell housings

Hi Matt. What uses the MT75 box? Is it a straight swap for the type 9?
By the way, I. have now realised that the whine is only in 3rd, 4th and 5th. It doesn't do it in 1st and 2nd.
Presumably this suggests it is a particular bearing.

all the manual scorpios use a rdw MT75

all Granada mk3's manuals and the 4x4 used them

sierra 4x4's used them to

you can make a v6 RDW mt75 by using the front casing off a 2.9 4x4 and the rear end off one of the scorpio boxes (ive got a manual box in my 24v cossie)

if you can post a pic of the gear box bellhouing off the p100 may help

Pat I have an MT75 from a 2.3 Scorpio.

Its the later one with the lower ratio top gear which I was keeping it for a special occasion ;)

I also have a 2 litre one but its still on a car.

If you go down the MT75 road let me know and I'll bring one down with me.

Many thanks for your input chaps.
Matt - sorry I can't post a pic as the box is still in the truck but that info is useful.
The MT75 sounds the road to go down as long as it is the same length etc and I haven't got to start looking for a matching propshaft or trying to modify mountings. I would rather just live with the whine!
Even if I source a type 9, there is no guarantee it will be any better - I've already got 2 faulty ones! Can either of you or anyone else advise please?
Stuart - many thanks for your offer. I'll discuss with you further when(or if) I get answers to the above.

Didn't the early Granada 4x4 use the Type 9 as per the early Sierra 4x4 ?

Yes it did, it was then changed to the MT75 (approx 1990/91)

:-[  It was the back axle.
Sorry guys. Thanks anyway for your help.

P.S. Stuart - I have sent you a separate email re-your offer. Thanks again.
