Title: Shock absorbers
Post by faffi on May 17th, 2010, 9:35pm
I'm probably going to bring up old topics more than once, which again is guaranteed to irritate oldtimers here. But the search function didn't come up with anything useful, so I risk annoying some of you by asking about shock absorbers.

The car I'm hoping to be buying (reluctant seller) is a Cossie from 1996 with full history and 86,000 miles on the clock. Recently, it was fitted with new KONI rear shock absorbers. I know they are yellow :D And according to their website, they are of a sporty variant.

My question is - is it a good idea to also replace the front shock absorbers even if they feel OK, or is it mostly a waste of money? If they should be replaced, what with? I want comfort more than racer handling, BTW.

PS! My former '97 2.3 had 90,000 miles on it in the end, and the absorbers felt just as good as they did at 56,000 miles when I first got it. Not having driven a zero mileage Scorpio, it's hard to tell how they were like when new, but they felt perfectly OK by me.

My '95 2.9 had 96,000 miles on it when I bought it and the shock absorbers were still deemed roadworthy by MOT when I sold it with 152,000 miles on it, but they were no able to keep the suspension from bottoming frequently. Not that they were all that much better at first, but they did deteriorate. The '95 also always rode a lot lower than the '97, for whatever reason.

Both of them would easily stay with my current 04 Mondeo around corners, but the Scorpios struggled really hard with speed bumps and potholes (the '95 in particular) that the Mondeo just shrugs off as nothing. Over one particular speed bump near home, the '95 would bottom its front suspension above 15-20 mph and the Mondeo will sail comfortably over it doing 40 mph - a huge difference.

Sorry, long-winded again...

Eirik

Forgot to mention that the Mondeo currently has 76,000 miles on it, in case somebody wondered.
