Please can someone advise?

How do you remove the alternator belt tensioner as I would like to inspect it. I suspect you undo the allen key in the centre but thought I'd better ask before I go in there hand fisted.

Yes that's right,but obviously remove the belt first by putting a large spanner on the pulley bolt and taking the tension off.The 2.9 ones sometimes develop a rattle in the spring housing,I had one that did it for years with no trouble other than annoyance !!

Mike,

It can be too tight though with a standard length spanner, especially the one for the longer belt. I needed to add an extra foot length (lock grip with another spanner) to get it to move.

I sprayed in a bit of CRC in the center, can't see how it could hurt in moderate amounts.

Added a little oil to compressor tensioner spring but the alternator one appears to be a sealed unit. Didn't actually remove it in the end, thought it best to leave it be.
But thanks to the advice given here was able to move the swing arm to release the belt, it was actually very easy to do so.

Yes I can't believe the spring is that strong ;D
