Title: Ashtray removal
Post by tonyboy on Jun 12th, 2010, 6:33pm
Hello. Been having trouble with my lights,
as in that when i have my lights on and the engine running, i can't turn the engine off not untill i switch the lights off. I have just changed the fuse box, and still the same prob, so i'm thinking there may be a short somewhere. I have been hearing strange noises after the engine has been swithed off, coming near the radio area and someone sugested there might be a short behind the ashtray, and i was wondering how to get to the back of the ashtray. Any sugestions please..........

To remove the ashtray you need to remove the whole dash. The usual culprit is the cigar lighter. See if you can sort that !.

If you take the radio out and you have small hands you may be able to get at the rear of the ash tray but slim fingers can sometimes get there by easing the side panel away slightly , but your fault is as suggested  by Simmo the most likely caused by the cigar lighter as it is PERMANENTLY live even with the ignition OFF.

Thanks for the comments. I was thinking of taking the radio out fist to see if i could get behind it. I might be able to feel if anything is untoward. Cheers will keep you posted. ( maybe take me 3 weeks to get round to it ) ;)

Title: Update:  Ashtray removal
Post by tonyboy on Jul 13th, 2010, 9:54pm
Hello... Update.... Sorted out my problem with the light switch and the engine running. The story is, when i first got the car, the lights didn't work , so changed fuse box 3 times, still had trouble so i put some bridges in from the multipin  connector to the fuse box and it did the trick, lights all now working...... anyway, there is a dark green wire comming from the multipin connector, which i connected to one of the fuses, ( which i can't remember at the moment ) . And this green wire had come out of the fuse, which was causing the engine to run whilst the lights were on...... and i found that out after i had taken all the front facia off to see if i could see any melting wires..... and for some reason i thought i would take a look in the fuse box... thats when i found the green wire loose...
