Title: Update Burning Smell
Post by PJDavis on Jun 30th, 2010, 11:50am
A good while ago I had a slight problem with a burning smell coming into the interior of the car whilst it was sitting stationary and whilst hot.   The smell would appear then disappear for a while, at whatever temperature.   I changed the oil today, and decided to look for those plug thingy's that get clagged up.   They were really clagged up with an oily gunge, and just happened to be dripping this watery/oily/gunge onto the lower part of the cat.   All cleaned up now, no smell!   Hoorah!!

Aircon drains probably correct, but where does the oil come from?

There are pictures of doing these drain thingy's on here.   And it's an oily sort of gunge they get blocked up with.   So, I just thought I'd let ya's know that might cause a stink in the cabin like burning oil.   They were very 'claggy'.

Funnily enough............... I was out in the car today, and it is hot today, and behold in stationary traffic I got a slight smell of this 'burning-oil-smell' again!!!   Blast!   Those of you might remember the original smell reared it's ugly head just after I changed the engine and gearbox oil.   Well I have just changed the engine oil a few days ago, and here the smell is slightly back?   I have had the car on the ramp at work today, and there is NO-LEAK from anywhere, I didn't spill any oil whilst filling it, very careful because of this reason.   I was looking back my 'car-diary' and the original smell happened two days after the oil change, and carried on for quite a while.   I changed the oil last Friday, and although not as strong by far as the original smell, it's still faintly back!   Very strange.   I've done all the usual things, like changing the vents  inside the car about and air-con off/on, and trying to find where under the bonnet the smell is.   The car performs faultlessly, lots of power (for a 2.3) and still good MPG about 28, it uses no oil or coolant, and starts and drives great.    Never mind, I'm just being a bit pedantic I think, but just a heads-up if others come across this prob'.

Could it be somewhere off the front and being blown back onto the exhaust manifold by air through the radiator? How about breather pipe to the air filter box?

Aye Simmo ta.   I did those wee valves a week or so ago, and they were really clagged-up.   All had been fine for a long while, I changed the oil recently and the 'burning smell' returned.   When I look back my car diary the first time I got it was just exactly after I changed the oil the last time.   Although this time it's only very faint.   I'm not too perturbed about it, just a bit strange.

Thanks for all replies.

I did once have a plastic bag get blown underneath a car and get wrapped around the exhaust pipe and melted/burnt. That stank for a bit ;D
