I have three car keys. I always use the key with the built in light to open and lock the driver’s door. The spare black key and the red key will also open and lock the driver’s door.

The nearside door can be locked with any key but it can only be opened with the red key which is always at home.

The spare black key has hardly ever been used by me although the dimensions are slightly smaller than the virtually unused red.

I would like both black keys to open all locks.

Can I have two new black keys cut from the red master or is this a job for Ford?

As a matter of interest, does the red key have a memory and if so could it fail or is it part of an inductive loop?

Hi Malcolm,

Cheapest solution : I'd get your local key cutter to cut you a couple, just the metal parts and superglue them into your original black fobs.

the chip inside the key is part of a loop as you assumed and has no memory/battery

Malcolm,

On UK ebay you'll find Ford transponder keys (with red square on top) for a tenner or so. Ask these for genuine ones http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Retroford-Int-1970s-80s-Ford-spares they're very nice to deal with. If they don't have (worth contacting them as not all is on ebay), there are plenty others if you search on ebay. Cutting is usually a tenner so not much to save really by gluing blades. The key blade can be read with a trained eye and cut from that, they won't use a copier of any sort. Using the red key you just add the new transponder keys to the system. It's less than a minute per key, scroll down a bit to see how: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pats.htm, forget the FMD part.

Got the same problem, insofar that black key I normally use (the 'spare', as original with inbulit light is well worn out), won't unlock passenger door.

Can't remember if red does. Anyway, a new key that came with a new ignition barrel (but no PATS), DOES unlock it. Was going to replace lock but turns out nothing basically wrong with it after all, now I carry 2 keys around.

NB there's no resistance in the lock direction I've discovered, anything that will go in and turn it will lock it.

Thank you for all for the constructive replies, also the reference to the page on PATS. I never realised that the car is equipped with such good security.

I was contemplating filing or machining a copy of the red key but having just purchased a set of parts for building a powerful new computer I will check the local locksmith to see what they can offer.

Best not try filing, try to find someone with the proper machinery to do it accurately. There's quite enough problems can be caused by tolerances being slightly off as it is ;D

Like in your case most likely one of the lock wafers is not quite being turned round far enough, or even slightly too far, then it won't line up and release the lock.

On second sight that doesn't make a lot of sense, what I meant was the wafers are only used in the unlock direction (grooves must line up to allow the locking pin to drop), this isn't required for the lock direction, there's no resistance apart from the return spring. So any key will lock it.

I called into the local security / key cutting company near Stourbridge.

My red key had the original tag inscribed with the cutting code.

I had two choices, a complete new key for £19.85 but I chose an alternative.

A cut with a saw and they extracted the red tip from my old key, removed the small enclosed inductive device and installed it in a newly cut key blank.

They did not use the old key as a master but simply typed the cutting code into their machine.

The new fully operational key with the old inductive loop inserted cost £16.45 including VAT

Hello Mike H

The answer to the $64,000 question is that the gentleman who cut the new key and transplanted the contents from beneath the red part of the old black key came out and tried the new key in every lock. The new key opened every lock on the car, however on the little used passenger door lock the key feels that it should be ‘Run In’.

I will now sacrifice my other old black key and I will then have a full set of working keys.

OK then, super yes I expect the passenger door lock is the least used if you think about it so not surprising.
