Hello,I was wondering if anybody could help me out here.I have a scorpio 2.3 ultima 1996 model.I am not very savvy with cars in general,but here goes,my heater controls dont work on positions 1 and 2 but work on position 3 only.Also it is blowing cold air only.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is usual for Ultima models to have climate control,yours appears to have standard aircon with the three speed switch.The most likely culprit is failure of the rheostat in the top of the evaporator housing,they can be repaired as per instructions on this site,or replaced,not a complex task.Regarding the lack of heat,check that coolant is circulating through the heater,and that both pipes are hot,if not the matrix could be blocked,or an air lock present.Presumably the air control flaps are responding to the control knob,and you don't have continuous cold air direct into the car.

As Gozz says it is unusual for an Ultima not to have climate control which differs from Air Con. Have a read of This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/aircon.htm) and check out which you have. The links on the left have more info. If you do have Climate control there is a re-set procedure shown. The link to the 'Thermal Fuse' is the one Gozz refers to.

But this wouldn't cause it to blow cold all the time. Maybe the heater matrix is blocked as well, which is a very common problem with the Scorpio as it gets older :)
