Title: Rattle
Post by PJDavis on Sep 29th, 2010, 6:11pm
A quick one!   I'm sure I've seen this kind of problem before.   I have a wee 'rattle' when going over bumps at slow-speed coming from the off-side only, aye, like 'pot-hole' bumps.   To get the 'rattle' when the car is stationery, I have to kick the rear wheel quite hard in the rotation direction at the back of the tyre.   There appears to be Nothing loose, around the rear, I picked a few 'chuckies' out of the dish in the rear wishbone thinking the sound maybe similar, but it's still there.   It's rather like a faint loose exhaust clamp.
Now wasn't there something about the rear calipers?   I've checked the calipers and brake pads, and they have the shims fitted, and the 'rattle' is there brakes on or off, also hand-brake on or off.   Silly thing really, but if there's any rememberings of a similar nature, share and I'll be grateful.

PS.   I have NO exhaust clamps, it's one-piece Stainless steel!

Peter.

This probably isn’t your problem if you’ve not changed the shocks or if you have an estate.

When I changed my saloon rear shocks they had metal shrouds (the original were plastic) and they rang over some bumps. I put some insulation tape around the mouth of the shrouds to deaden the ring & some tape around the top of the dampers to act as guides.

PJD.
Are the little anti rattle springs OK that are fixed to the top of the rear brake pads, they make an annoying wee rattle if one is busted. What are the shims ? never had any on my cars ! Maybe it's not the little springs if it still does it with the brakes on  ::)

Thanks for replies so-far.

Haven't changed the shocks, and given them a thump, it's not them.

Aye, the 'shims' are the springs you refer to, they are right and tight.

Jonny, first thing I thought of, these are tight.

The rattle does seem to be coming from the caliper area though, even with the wheel off I can't find it.   And with the car raised on a trolley-jack it seems reluctant to make the noise!

Have you checked the stabilizer bar links for play? And bearings (probably a long shot based on the symptoms)?

I'VE FOUND IT!!!!!!!    :D

I got into work today and was about to place the car on the M/V ramp when I kicked the side of the tyre for the umpteenth time, and the rattle was more prominent.   So, just by tapping the tyre it was quite loud.   So I carefully reversed the car onto a kerb on the off-side and crawled under it.   I started tapping away with a hide-mallet all around the wishbone area and brake caliper.   Just by chance I tapped at the bottom of the shockers mounting, and there it was, a large-ish stone caught between the bottom shock mounting and the square cup.   I'll have to un-bolt the bottom shock mounting to get it out!   But at least I know what it is now.......... ;D
Thanks for all the replies.

Peter
