Hello Folks

It looks as if I'm going to have to replace my Cat soon-ish, it's very slightly blowing I think, so a few questions. 1998 2.3 Ultima, pre-facelift.

Best place to buy the Cat, I'm not too perturbed about the price, I'd rather it fit well and did the job well. And the people I get it from know what they're talking about! (The rest of my Exhaust system is Stainless Steel)

Will it make much difference if the new Cat doesn't have the shields like the FMD one does?

Are there gaskets between the Manifold and Cat, and between the Cat and Flexi?

If the car is up on ramps, will I have enough room to take-off and put on the Cat from underneath?

I think I'll have to do this job on my driveway. I have ramps, and a wee trolley-jack, and axle-stands.

Would I be best to get the Lambda Sensor off from the top or bottom, and does anyone know the size of the hex on it? Also if I need to replace the Lambda Sensor, where should I look for one of them, and what price should I look at?

My thoughts on method are: get all the shields off from under the bonnet, and make sure I can reach all the bolts for loosening. Put the car up on the ramps and start from underneath, finally unbolt the upper parts and drop the cat down to the floor. Wiggle the new Cat up from underneath and re-install?

I really don't want to trust my car to an exhaust place like kwik-fit, or national tyres, these places drive me nuts with their incompetence!

Surely it can't be that difficult, I replace exhausts on my old cars in Malta, and I've done exhausts before, I'm just looking for a bit of seasoned advice.

Last Question, (I'm sure you's will be glad to hear) The suspected tiny hole is at the bottom of the Cat Box, might this cause the car to very occasionally hesitate whilst driving along? This very slight hesitation has only just happened, and it only happens once every three/four journeys. There is no light on the dash, but would I expect to get one if and when the cat finally blows a big hole? I only ask because the engine warning light came on when the wife's wee car had a hole in the front pipe, and to get the light off I disconnected the battery for two hours once I'd replaced the exhaust.

Also: How many Lambda sensors are there? I can see the one in the side of the cat in the engine compartment, is that the only one?

else was reccomended might've got one from some place 'across the road' but can't remember the name of the place, exhaust spares and suchlike place

I believe there's supposed to be two sensors, before and after, in the cat pipes, and can be a pig to unscrew so might need soaking in releasing fluid first.

There are no holes in my new cat ;D

According to my mechanic guy (who did it) not possible to leave the remainder of the system entirely in situ undisturbed. Watch out as well for the condition of the flexible pipe, that follows the cat. Although on mine it was the only good enough original bit to go back on! ;D

Thanks very much for the info. The rest of my system is Stainless Steel, and it's one-piece so it's easy to disconnect as well. There must be a sensor lower down from the one that I can see under the bonnet.

Just done my cat on 2.3 estate, there is only one sensor on the cat.

Is the one sensor above the cat box, and kind-of goes through the exhaust manifold shield? Is there a gasket between the manifold and the Cat-Pipe? How was the job?

Yes the sensor is above the cat box, yes there is a gasket between the manifold and cat fmd part number is 7046482(got mine from fmd £10)job fairly easy I just had a bit of trouble undoing the bolts from the crossbar.
Mike when you get your cat there are two holes one before the cat and one after, on the 2.3 you only the top one as there is only one sensor, come complete with a blanking plug for spare hole. There also is a bracket with two holes to bolt it to engine.

Thanks for that last post. When you talk about the 'Cross-Bar' you're talking about the underneath 'brace-Bar' between the bottom rear of the suspension struts? Two bolts either side?
