Assuming you mean the parts that allow the calliper complete to move as the pads wear, look here:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/frontrearbrakes.htm
Click on the rear calliper drawing at the top, bolt 14 bolts into the slide pin, you can see there's a rubber bellow that covers the slide pin.

Thanks Tompion, thats what I thought.  So although the bolt 14 can be removed and caliper removed the slide pin still could be seized.

Yes, could be but they’re only a sliding fit. They have a hexagon on them so you can prevent them turning when you undo the calliper bolts so you should be able to revolve them to free them off.

hi there

i always take them off and clean them with WD40 before coating in copper grease, when changing the brake pads.

oh, watch the wee rubber 'boot' as they're hard to get if you damage one.

And if you damage one, muck eventually gets in and seizes the pin, then you get rapid uneven wear and the disc is scored  :(

Copper grease is fine for the backs/edges of the pads & caliper piston edge, but no good for the caliper sliding pins & rubber sleeves.

The caliper sliding pins should be coated with 'brake grease' (usually comes in a small tube from Halfords or good local spares shop for about a fiver).

Copper grease is abrasive & can scratch the sliding pins & the rubber sleeves, preventing the pins from sliding smoothly through the sleeves. It also has a lower melting point than brake grease, so won't lubricate as well when the brakes are hot  :)

hi jc

you learn something new everyday!

that said, i've never had any trouble doing it 'my' way, but if it's seized to start with, better to follow jc's recommendations just in case.

Over time the sliding pins do tend to get a little pitted & collect black deposits from the rubber sleeves. The pins can be cleaned off & if the rubber sleeves are badly worn (pins aren't a snug fit), then new ones can be bought from Bigg Red (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ford-Brake-caliper-repair-kit-slider-rubbers-222055K-/310191508542?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4838dacc3e#ht_5025wt_905) on Ebay

They don't list the Scorpio, but I did contact them (earlier in the year) to check that they were also for a Scorpio & they confirmed that they were. So I bought this kit & they fitted fine....a case of one size fits most Fords from that era  ;)

Regarding the brake grease for the sliding pins/rubber sleeves THIS (http://www.silverfoxtractorspares.com/trw-brakerubber-grease-13420-p.asp) is what I use....£4.99 in my local motor factors  :)

Hope this helps  :)

Well thought I will get some brake grease so I have all I need to do this job, into Halfords but can not find it, not suprising as it has recently been revamped so nothing is as it was.  Asked a assistant (not a spotty youth either) his eyes rolled then he smiled and sid "ah yes you need copper grease" pointed out about the abrasive qualitys of it, eyes rolled again so gave up.  Motor factors Monday.

To be honest, I've never bought brake grease from Halfords, but for some strange reason, I thought that they might stock it.....doh !!.......

How foolish of me....I should have remembered......Halfords is a chav boy racer shop, who's slack jawed, devoid of personalty staff can only advise on shiny overpriced alloys, sub bass stereo systems & how to assemble one of their cheapo mountain bikes....& that's if you can find one of them  ::)

Best go to a local motor factors....they'll know what you're talking about  ;).... :)

Very interesting Stuart....the questions have got me thinking  ::)

•Do you have a decrease in libido (sex drive)? ....Yes, I'm married.
•Do you have a lack of energy? ....Yes, I'm married with kid, mortgage, bills etc.
•Do you have a decrease in strength and/or endurance? ....See previous answer.
•Have you lost height?....No, but I've gained girth.
•Have you noticed a decreased “enjoyment of life”?....What do you think ?  ::)
•Are you sad and/or grumpy?....Only when I'm awake.
•Are your erections less strong?.... Less strong than what ?  ???
•Have you noted a recent deterioration in your ability to play sports?....Don't have an ability to play sports due to my gout.
•Are you falling asleep after dinner?....No, after breakfast !!
•Has there been a recent deterioration in your work performance?....No, I work more hours for less money.

In addition to these questions, can you identify with any of the following symptoms?

A sense of being burned out, increased depression, increased irritability, increased anxiety, more nervousness, more joint complaints, increased sweating, a need for more sleep, more sleep disturbances, muscular weakness, physical exhaustion, impaired sexual potency, fewer morning erections, disturbed libido and decreased beard growth....

....No, my beard growth is quite normal, thankyou very much  ;)

Okay, so supposing that I am suffering from low testosterone levels, that are causing GOM syndrome (not sure I like that acronym  ???), then why do I always want to fight the world ?  ;D

Well finally got down to doing the slides, started with the side thta had the bearings done recently and yes it was seized, gently gently and out it came, cleaned up and coated in brakes grease job a good un, then!! then secong pin has snapped inside the bracket and no way of getting it out.  FMD bkt £92+vat swoon, SO has anyone got a spare r/h/r caliper bkt for a Cossie, rather urgent need.  The other side moved as sweet as anything

Isn't the caliper carrier bracket the same for all models  ???

Title: Re: caliper slides UPDATE URGENT
Post by gozz on Nov 17th, 2010, 10:39pm
The vented discs need a wider jaw Mike. And of course, the Cossie hub has longer lugs.

correct Gozz, all I need now is one carrier ;D

Title: Re: caliper slides UPDATE URGENT
Post by Scorpio_Mike on Nov 19th, 2010, 7:21pm
Are the caliper carriers L/R handed or the same for both sides ?

Will a carrier from a non-Cossie Scorpio with vented rear discs be the same ?

Title: Re: caliper slides UPDATE URGENT
Post by gozz on Nov 19th, 2010, 8:32pm
Mike.
Both sides appear identical, don't think they would need to differ, since the extra diameter of the Cossie disc is catered for on the hub lugs,I would think a non Cossie vented carrier must be the same.
                                    GOZZ.

Nice one GOZZ, I'm sure I have some in the shed but its dark and 'orrible out there right now...not to mention a right mess in the shed so locating it could be challenging to say the least.

According to Simmo it's always 'orrible in the shed,he seems worried that one day you may not emerge from there, and may even vanish for ever !  ;D

At long last the job is done, sourced a bracket from scrap cossie £15 bit different from £92 brand new, amazing thing is that when I removed the pins to clean and regrease one area under the rubber boot was as you would imagine after all the years in an exposed location, BUT the other had no rust and was shiny as the day it was fitted.  Both rubber boots in goon nick as well.  Alls well that ends well.
