1998 2.3 pre-face-lift. In the near future I'll be replacing the Thermostat, there are currently no issues with the cooling system except I think my thermostat is slightly stuck open. On a cold day the temp gauge hardly gets above the blue whilst driving along, as soon as I get to town the gauge goes to the middle after about 5 mins of town driving. In the summer time, not even when particularly hot the temp gauge would start to rise above the middle. The coolant is a nice clean blue colour, there are no leaks. I have purchased a Ford thermostat, and I can easily see the three bolts that need to be loosened to replace the thermostat. However, I know there is an issue with the bolts perhaps being stuck in the insert that is in-turn stuck into the manifold and can therefore end up cracking the manifold, obviously I would like to avoid that happening!

So, apart from using things like WD40 and 'Rost-Off-Ice' in an attempt to get these three wee bolts to come loose without cracking the manifold, does anyone have any 'sure-fire' way of the bolts NOT doing the damage? And, which bolt is the most likely to do the damage if there is one?

hi there

WD40 should be fine. when i done my old one, they came out ok.
just remember to keep your socket level, so all force is equal.

PJD.
Most problems are caused by overtightening,you only need to nip the bolts up to hold the rubber ring in place.
When I do them I clamp the feed pipe from the header tank,then only a pint or two of coolant is lost.

Hi Guys

I managed to loosen all three bolts this morning before heading off to work, and then nip them back up. (Aye I'm using another car for work) Yep I'd thought of clamping the header feed pipe, and I'll be testing the new thermostat before fitting it, in the traditional way of course, and whilst the gal is out of the kitchen! ;D

It's a good idea to lay a plastic bag over the alternator, they don't particularly like having coolant poured through them.
