Title: Radio replacement
Post by MrJones on Nov 23rd, 2010, 2:58pm
Hi, my 7000 radio has packed in, was thinking of buying a new radio, do I need a convertion lead of some sort and is there a special cage available to fit a smaller radio(hight wize) into the big gap where my 7000 sits?

The early cars all had 'thin' radios with a little storage box below, all my funeral cars have small radios, underneath which is a plate to house the rear heater controls,Coleman Milne (the stretchers),fitted Clarion radios to them via an aluminium box,you could do a similar thing.Altering wires is not too complex, but if you have CD player in the back,it may be a little more involved.

There is a double din conversion kit which allows the fitting of a single din head unit with gap underneath (as Gozz says). Easily available on ebay as Mk6 Escorts also had double din head units that people wanted to replace.

Regarding wiring, again they are easily available on ebay but it depends on what headunit you want to fit. For example there are plug in wiring looms for Ford wiring to Kenwood, Sony, JVC head units etc. Again they are not expensive.

A tenner should see you with a replacement housing and wiring loom ready for your new head unit that would already come with the aluminium cage.

As Gozz says, if you want to use your existing CD Changer (if you have one) it would be more complicated but given the cost of mp3 CD headunits these days, I wouldnt worry about not having the cd changer.

What I dont know is wether the stalk controls would still work through an aftermarket headunit.

Cheers for advice think I will take my 7000 apart and see wether I can find the fault first, then if not where will I get the Wiring loom and aluminium cage?

The cage will come with whatever aftermarket headunit you decide upon.

The wiring connectors are easy to find on ebay. Just make sure you buy one that connects to your new headunit as Kenwood, JVC and Sony can all have slightly different wiring patterns.
