Title: Cooling Fans on constant :(
Post by Fidget on Dec 14th, 2010, 10:48am
Freezing my bits off in my Ultima 2.0 16V right now, the stupid cooling fans come on about 20 seconds after starting and only go off on the rare occasion. The temperature guage rarely passes the blue mark.

I've tried a reset of the EEC by leaving the battery disconnected for 45 minutes, that cured it for one day only though. The next day, same problem.

Any help or advice is so gratefully received, especially with the uber-cold snap coming up later this week. Thanks in advance  :)

You may have a faulty switch.   On the 2.3, (I know it has a different manifold and switches) the temp switch when disconnected defaults to the fans being ON at the higher speed.   I know this for a fact because I drove to and stayed in Malta during the summer break, and so I fitted an inline switch so I could have the fans on constant whilst in Malta if need be.   The temperature some days was about 45 degrees C, Scorp' benefitted from the fans being on constant sometimes with no detriment that I could see to other systems.   On the other hand, the Zodiac I have in Malta defaults to the fans being OFF when the contact is broken.   I took the Scorp' this time with a load of Zodi' spares,  ;D

Thaniks Simmo, that page explained a lot ... now, with the AC off and driving at speed (60mph) the temp guage stays in the blue zone. If I stop or drive low speed, the temp guage goes up to normal operating temperature, so I am thinking the thermostat is partially stuck open. No fans running with AC off btw.

Looking at the coolant, it looks rather brown so I should flush and replace the stat.

It probably is rev related rather than speed.
When my 2.3 was doing that if I put it in first and drove with the revs highish the temp would drop within a short while.
With the stat working correctly the temp should stay in the middle of the gauge regardless of the fans running etc.

If the coolant’s rather brown chances are not much anti-freeze.

SOLVED:

The thermostat most certainly was stuck in the wide open position, replaced and everything is tickety-boo now.

Thanks to everyone for your help!! :)
