Title: front end knock 2.3
Post by pedropedro on Feb 3rd, 2011, 6:07pm
its not the link rods/anti roll bar bushes or wishbones ......theyve all been changed

if the car is lifted on jack after lowering its ok for a mile then this knocking occurs ...so think its the the shocks

could anyone comment/confirm please...tks

If the ball joint/s in the rack get dry they produce a sound like a knock when traversing a rough road.If you can introduce the knock by pressing down on a front corner, temporarily remove the track rod end and see if it goes. You can cure it by sliding the boot back, turning the rack to get at the joint then work it round with some gear oil.
The sound in this case is actually a creak, but passes through as a knock.

ok thanks for that,,,ive tried pushing down both sides no sound ....garage think its shocks but would like some advice before parting with money...its more a rattle ,slight banging, knocking ..when it started it would clear after 3-4 miles  now there all the time....as said jack the car up and it goes until 4-5 miles then back it comes.....really annoying

The front has Macpherson struts, not shocks....so any knock in it would most likely come from the upper bush being worn. This isn't a common problem really, as the bush is about as robust as you can get. The usual upper strut problems are creaking from the bush drying out (seems to be at certain times of year) or the bearing brace breaking (very rare).

If the sound comes from lower down, then it's defo not the top strut bush/bearing  ;)

As Gozz mentioned....the steering rack inner ball joints can cause a knock when they're worn.

To test them....grab a rod with one hand & clasp the other hand around the gaiter so you can feel the joint, then pull/push the rod. If the joint is bad, then you should feel & hear the click of the ball loose in it's joint.
A grease up of the joint doesn't tend to cure the problem, as the damage is usually already done due to water ingress (split gaiter)  :(

Another thought...when you replaced the wishbones, did you replace the large rear bushes ?

Hope this helps  :)

Go to This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faults_knock.htm) and then check out 'Steering Rack' on the buttons on the left as well. If the car has had things replaced you will see that it is crucial to torque the bolts up with the car on the ground. The details are available in 'Front suspension'on the same page.
