Title: Head slapping! Post by ro284 on Apr 7th, 2011, 10:35am Only way to describe it really, my 2-3 has had a new head, with valves, 2 months ago, i thought that the slapping noise the car already had, was from the tappets, and with new valves, cam followers, etc, would cure that problem, but it didnt, not too bad when warmed up, but when cold it is still there, dreadfull first thing in the morning, listening with a long screwdriver it does sound as if its top of the engine, and not the cam chain, almost sounds like a diesel! could this be worn camshafts? i am resigned to running it into the ground really. its a lovely drive, but done 155k Any advice Please? Thanks Bob |

Title: Re: Head slapping! Post by ro284 on Apr 7th, 2011, 12:04pm Well yes ernie. could be, in fact thats what it sounds like, but i can hear it through the rocker cover more than the side if you know what i mean, i suppose at the end of the day piston slap is more likely, with the mileage, but may not mean iminent failure of the engine! (if i can ignore the noise when cold!) it may go on a good bit yet. Therefore worth doing other odd bits to it, and cleaning it! cheers Bob |

Title: Re: Head slapping! Post by ro284 on Apr 9th, 2011, 7:45pm spark plugs (bosch 4 electrode) ok and in tight, no metal bits in the sump. That leaves either piston slap, (can't do much about that) or timing chain and guides. or tensioner, the noise was there before new tensioner, when i put the new tensioner in and released it i don't remember it locking in the high position, and thought it would pump up with oil and that would lock it, but i could be wrong there, perhaps it was faulty! or its piston slap, thinking about it more it's definitely not tappets the slapping would be there all the time, it's worse when cold. i'll settle for piston slap, keep it running for now, and try and get the 24v one legal for the future, Cheers guys |

Title: Re: Head slapping! Post by a900one on Apr 12th, 2011, 9:18pm You get piston slap, when cold, with short skirted pistons, normaly. How short are the scorps. |
