I was wondering if it would be good practice to occaisionally disconnect the battery for a few hours, as part of maintenence? clear any faults, what you reckon, any benifit to doing this? ive had my 2-9 for 2-1/2 years now, never had to disconnect the battery. its done 78k. or does the rule if it ain't broke! apply?

I never reset the ECU in all the years I had mine the one time it was disconnected was just after purchase it had to have a new battery and then have the CC reset but that was before I found the web site . So me personally like you said

After a battery disconnect the ECU has to relearn all its engine running settings, which needs driving a few miles I believe ~ so not a lot of point I wouldn't say no.

Not something I've ever done deliberately but can't see any benefit unless something has been changed/modified like an aftermarket exhaust system or air filter so it can relearn the setup.

Although thinking about it, I wonder if it would make a difference after say changing the plugs...?

Dunno, might be an interesting one to investigate ;D

Thanks for replies guys, i just fitted new plugs, new airfilter, will adjust tappets if needed, which is why i wondered about this,

They are continually learning anyway, I'd never disconnect a battery unless I really had to ;)

I disconect the battery as soon as i get a Scorpio now and leave it for a few days and its done me a lot more good than harm

LOL, I remember that post Stixy............

I can't explain it either,

Maybe a lot of the gearbox problems were due to crap in the oil and dirty filters, then when left, the muck drops to the bottom of the pan and forms a sludge, so when you tried again they effectively had cleaner oil and filter ;)

I wouldn't expect the gearboxes to do thousands of miles tho.

I know what you're saying though, some of the Jags, the interior light stays on...........disconnect battery for half hour or more, presto, fixed.

But also, disconnect the battery on most Renaults, and a few weeks later the Auto gearbox burns out............
Because you have to reset the Throttle sensors after each disconnect / flat battery...........seen it loads of times. Chryslers too, you lose the CVI's in the gearbox program, causes a bind up which burns out clutches ;)

So jurys out really, as ya say some cars can benefit, some can cause all sorts of grief............
me personally I only disconnect if I really have to ;)

Yet more reasons to stay with old fords , I have heard a few horror stories now about Renaults but i diddnt know chryslers were as bad .

15 to 20 mile "OBD" trip ;)

But the Renault's and Chryslers DON'T :o

You have to reset them to base settings first, then they learn :(
