Title: Wheel movement
Post by Pegasus on May 6th, 2011, 2:14pm
Hi,
recently changed brake fluid so took opportunity to grab the wheels while suspended and did some rocking at 12/6 and 3/9 oclock. All tight EXCEPT the FOS at 3/9 position - moved about 1cm.

Is this likely to be radius arm bushes, links rods or (god forbid) the steering rack balljoint? Or any other likely cause?

Ta

Paul

Could be a few things.

You should be able to see the problem fairly easily from below

3/9 O'clock does suggest steering. I think there is something can be tightened up, cos I've had it done

I would check track rod end and rack ball joint Paul, the wishbones are best checked with the wheel down,by rocking the wheel fore and aft as if it is rolling on the road,if it moves more than a little the problem is usually in the back bush which can be changed without any serious dismantling. If you need to fit one,the gap in the aluminium collar goes at the top and don't tighten the big nut until the car has assumed it's natural rolling height. If the rack ball joint is loose you should be able to adjust it slightly, turn the steering 'til the end of the rack is as far out as possible, then remove the gaiter. You will need to ascertain how the barrel nut is secured before attempting to turn it,they are sometimes pinned.

Thanks Lads,
The tie (spindle) rod has some wear & tear (as here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/srackrepair.htm)) so new set ordered with new gaiters and lock nuts from FPUK - cost £136.

The lot for £42.25 delivered.

Do you have a pair of stilsons to get the tie rod off?
