We have 3 car keys - One only operates the nearside door, one only turns the ignition on but will not start the car and the third will start car and also unlock door nearside. We need a spare in case of the obvious and preferably one that does everything!! Help required please as I believe they are programmed and how do I go about doing this or can I buy one from anywhere. Sorry so many questions but these keys are a nightmare!

Forgot to add this is an S Reg (1998) Scorpio Estate

Reg. The first thing is do you have a red key as it is this which you need to programme other keys. The fact that only one will start the car would indicate that the others have not been programmed and if there is a problem with the locks being worn that could also be a factor. Do the keys appear badly worn?. :)

Hi Simmo - thank you very much for the information. Yes the Red Key is almost new and has not long been in play, only since the others started acting up, but thats the one that turns the ignition on but wont start the car! Have had a quick look at the site you suggested and will study it carefully when I have more time tomorrow.

If its a late 97/98 build car it would only have had black keys from new.

So one only opens the ns door but wont turn the ignition lock?

one opens the ns door and starts the car?

one only works the ignition but wont start the engine and wont open the doors?

none of them open the drivers door or boot?

Could there may have either been an ignition barrel change or door lock change at some time?

I don't have just one that will "do everything" either!

Got a new lock kit for front n/s, then after I built it, keys still won't work in it! But the new non-pats one that came with a new ign barrel a while back will. Turns out that will work in the front n/s as well, so now I carry both keys around. If only I discovered that before buying the lock ::)

Thank you Highlander and Mike, these keys are a nightmare for someone (my husband is 74) is who isnt technically minded. He isnt computer literate either so I do it. All he is worried about is finding one day that none of them work and that the dog gets locked in the car!! I think he will probably have to go and seek some help and get someone to do it for him. Hopefully it wont be too expensive as I think he will be giving up driving at end of this year.

Yes you really need a key or keys that will open the car. Amazing how many rely on the remote control only.

Personally I think it's a bad design, slightest bit wears out, it stops working ::)

Note that the coded cut-outs are only required to unlock, so it's possible to lock a door with a key which will then not be able to unlock it again.

Note 2 ~ if you leave the car for 150 hours (roughly 6 days) it turns off the radio receiver for the remote (to help save battery charge).

Highlander - no key will open drivers side, 2 keys open the boot but with great difficulty.

You may be able to free both the drivers door lock and the boot lock with WD40 and some elbow grease if its seized up

however if they are worn a barrel rebuild kit is needed.

I suspect your keys would then all work in the new lock and that just getting a copy of the programmed key that starts the car will give you the spare you need.

Most locksmiths will copy and programme a key a lot cheaper than the Ford dealers.

Reg, or should I say Mrs Reg, ;) the tailgate lock on the estate is prone to get 'gunged up' with road dirt because of its exposed position. Does it open easily when unlocked and you just press the button in?. If not,as Stuart says, try some WD 40 around the moving parts and see if that helps with the key action as well. :)

I have 2 black keys and the red key with my scorpio and 2 sets of the keys have a small black plastic label with the key numbers on them. Some key places can make a duplicate key using this number if you have the label? Also they should be able to work out the number from your keys then make the copy and then programme it from your working key.

There is only 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 as choices of depth.

'1' is no cut at all, '4' is the deepest.

Just thought I would pass on an experience I had a year ago. I took my highest mileage car in for an MOT to a garage new to me in the town centre. I chose them because I could walk back home after dropping it off, thus saving money on taxis. About an hour later they phoned to say they couldn't start the car as they had got the key stuck in the ignition and it wouldn't turn, and they told me it was my responsibility to move the car out of their MOT bay! I told them it was not my fault that they had broken it and so they should fix it free of charge. They refused. In the end I had to call the AA to the garage to bypass the ignition, effectively to hot wire the car to get it started. Needless to say I did not go back!
