Title: Engine conversion
Post by JimmyJaffa on Jun 4th, 2011, 8:26pm
Hi all, it's been a while since i have been on here due to my engine giving up and now it time to sort out my motor. i have a 2.9 EFI saloon (95). and was wondering if i could covert the engine to a diesel. If so would it be to much trouble and would i have to change the gearbox? Also what diesel engines would fit, many thanks, Jim.

Hi

In short your looking at changing :

Fuel tank and fill nozzel
Engine
Gearbox
Exhaust
Electrical modifications to ignition and starting system
Ecu change and intergration or bypass on pats

Would be easier putting a smaller petrol lump in

Would be easier buying a diesel ;)

Its possible but quite a big undertaking

The Scorpio/Granada diesel engine would fit easy enough

but anything is possible :)

Agree with all the above...................

Also, why diesel ???

With the diesel being 5 ppl dearer than petrol now, plus the lack of lustre performance, they really arent cheaper to run anymore.

Coagulant is now being added to red diesel, so anyone wishing to take a chance will now end up with a fuel system full of jelly the minute they run low and put pump fuel in :(

For me diesels are now a thing of the past.

I'd put another 2.9 in it and convert it to LPG ;)

Good 12V's are a bit like rocking horse poop.
A 2.9 BOA 24V would be your easisest swap with your existing gearbox and wiring, ECU will almost plug and play, just a few wires to swap over at the plug (both engines use EEC IV Management).  Your exhaust will fit with a little tweak on the O/S downpipe.  All mounts flywheel (drive plate), converter etc are a straight swap ;)

Just as a matter of interest I have an LPG kit that came off a 12v scrap estate,it is not a sequential system but the earlier type where the gas is drawn in via the intake hoses.
I now have no 12v engines on the fleet,so someone else may like to use it for a fair price.

Fraid so Stuart, though I've now 'retired' ie only have three limos left,no hearses,my loyal customers have taken them on with a limo apiece, and are going it alone.I've had one limo 'gassed' and am filling the gaps left by my 'retirement'.I bought a grand Cossie limo the other day from a funeral director in Telford,it's all light blue leather,a Grosvenor built for some big gambling casino, curtains in the back window, fixed centre seat with three belts etc etc,can just imagine big Freddie getting pitched out of it into the Thames or the Clyde for not settling his debt  :o

Didn't think customer loyalty would be something you would see much of in the funeral business  ;D

Cheap tax & pulling power is only benefit of a diesel nowadays !

I mainly do motorway miles & pull a caravan now & then.

Well at £130 a year for the Focus ! ;D
Compare to a 1.8 petrol at £210 or a 2.0 petrol at £245
I'd say it's cheap

At the end of the day they want us all to be driving little shoe box cars !

For your merc Baz that is just crap !
Just the same as most small 4x4's no need for the price of the tax !
