Title: 12 valve stumbling!
Post by ro284 on Jun 19th, 2011, 10:05pm
My 12 valve has recently been playing up, with an unsteady tickover, and stalling, a bit hesitant to start when cold, reverse out the drive and it cuts out, then get to a junction, same again, every time i stop it cuts out, when it's warmed up it seems a bit less likely to cut out, but the tickover is un-steady, have cleaned plugs, new air filter, cleaned idle valve, have never touched distributor, could that be the first thing to check? any advice please. thanks

Check the rotor arm inside the distributor, also check the main HT lead coming from the coil into it.
Also worth cleaning the top of the coil.
It is quite old technology on the 12v.
Give the IACV a clean as well. and make sure the vacum pipes are all connected and not leaking.

Many thanks Snoopy, quote--It is quite old technology on the 12v.--unquote, It is, i thought the distributor was electronic, though i don't know why i did! It was the HT pins in the distributor. had a build up of muck on them, i had never checked this before, transformed the car,
Cheers
