Title: ignition key problems
Post by carlos on Jul 29th, 2011, 8:38pm
I had a problem last week in that the ignition key would not turn. I looked at several articles on the web and it seems a common problem. I eventually managed to get it to position 1 to remove the lock barrel and removed the lock tumblers/wafers. Instead of immediately buying a repair kit I reinserted the barrel with no innards and of course the key turned,in fact it will turn with any ford key.But of couse the car won't start without the key with the transponder. My car is not a concours car so i'm at present driving it quite happily .
You need internal and external circlip tool to strip down the lock.

Hi carlos and welcome

Theres a few things you can do if your not fussed about looks or extra keys

The rotary switch unit can be easly taken off the colum and turned with a screw driver, so long as the key is near the ignition barrel it will work

Another method is just get another barrel and key off a scrapper, you can programe black keys from the car

Carlos, I had the same problem a few weeks ago and got stuck in Lakeside car park when the key would not turn which meant I could not remove the barrel. (I had bought the repair kit from Ford's for 19.00 that day!!) AA to the rescue and turned the key with brute force. As soon as I got home, I removed the barrel and did the repair the next morning and without any circlip tool whatsoever, job done same key and everything. Trust me, it was that easy. Lee

I'm not sure how it's possible to strip down the key barrel without circlip pliers, but i'm no expert. Also I have a spare key with no transponder which won't work even with the transponder key nearby,i've never quite worked this one out .

Thanks for the instructions ,I've got the car on a SORN at the moment but the car starts and would drive ok with no innards to the key barrel .I also run a Mitsubishi ASX which has no key ,only a fob and as long as the fob is in the car no problem. If I can unlock the steering with my set up but can't start the car without the key with the reader i don't see any problem.Think about it ,or am I missing something
