Title: coolant leak... sealant
Post by pedropedro on Aug 10th, 2011, 5:55pm
my 2.3 which has rough idling also  has a water leak..steam comes out of exhaust and wonder if two are connected....leak started after head reworked a year ago...ditto the lumpy idle

question ..if i use K-Seal, recommend by a few folk, what are the chances of the heater matrix blocking ??.....its perfect now but knowing the issues re replacing am nervous about putting anything in water that might compromise it ..anyone used or can offer feedback ??

Steam coming out the exhaust is a bad sign.

you either have a leaking/cracked inlet manifold leaking water into the head or the head and/or head gasket is away, either way it needs a proper repair.

the 2.3 heads are prone to cracking between cylinder 3 and 4 and if thats the problem then nothings going to help but a new head.

K-seal seems to get good reviews but I would only use a coolant additive as a quick fix to get home unless it was a radiator, I have used rad sealants before and they have lasted years

I know...just trying to avoid a big deal....its a 2nd car and isnt driven much........its there in case of dramas with #1 car !

water pump seized...head needed rework etc cost a lot but ever since steam has come out of exhaust..loses a pint every 1k miles...

how do i get a replacement head (for car)   ???  do you have i can buy ?

probably worth doing and getting new or replacement head  its a 2.3

I dont have any no but you'd need to make sure thats what the problem is first, it might be the manifold, they are even more prone to cracking on the 2.3

Did a garage do the head for you last time?

yes garage did and new manifold was fitted when they did job..old one had crack

well...thought i would give the sealant a go ....poured neat into header and after 10 mins zero water coming out of exhaust no steam !  ...it was a steady drip before.....so probably matrix will block now ! but since i dont use much worth  a try ..will post if it it fails but the stuff certainly works very efficiently

Did I read somewhere on this site that a 2.0 head would fit on the 2.3?
It might be easier to get one of those if they do fit.

Indeed I believe so, and while you're at it the 2L alloy inlet manifold to go with it might be a good idea as well, someone more expert is bound to be able to advise on the details of that

Sounds rather as though it weren't put back together properly  ???

I believe that the gasket between the intake manifold and the heads is leaking, making the water go into the first cylinder.

As for changing the manifold I did this swap from my 2.0 to the 2.3.  The plastic one was OK but was leaking air and did a slush sound together with a slight miss fire when pressing quickly the accelerator pedal when idling. The only part needed was a new gasket for the manifold. I have used the  sensors from the 2.0 (ECT, IAT, Dash temperature) and TPS. The MAF was from the 2.3.
You will have redo some of the vacuums and od course triple checked them. You will also need the plastic resonator, and air intake pipes along with the 2.0 IACV.

By the way the engine power now is amazing, also the fuel consumption when down a bit. Pressing the accelerator hard in first gear with the clutch fully on simply make the wheels break traction and spins them, the torque is amazing. The only thing needing to be sorted out is making a device to control the variable inlet (in progress now).
