I know its a silly question but advice would be appreciated anyway before i start.....cloud of smoke from pipe area going up to egr when revved up ...cant hear any exhaust leak...what is most likely cause based on history ? ...cracked exhaust manifold ?? i cant work on until cools down so was interested in any thoughts beforehand

Sounds like the manifold is cracked. Does it make a dull blowing sound when you start the engine? Generally cracks through the centre and there will be black smoke on the underside of the heat shield. Lee

yes thats it....is it likely to crack across & seperate as cant get sorted for a while

Hard to say but you'll prob be ok for a while :-)

Be aware that exhaust gasses may enter the cabin - not good.
