This looks a dead ringer for the 24v thermostat:-

Anybody have the hose dia for the 24v thermostat connections?

I'm using a slightly modified BMW E30 thermostat in my cossie. The bypass output was cut and a machining shop made for it a straight exit. I believe it was soldered.

Ermm.. nope i did not make a note but i do remember that all the inlets / outlets were of the same size (and i think they were of 32 mm). I don't remember to have any trouble fitting it. It went nicely with the original hoses, but as i was saying, you need to cut the bent part.

That's a good swap, only thing is the arrows on your photo should be the other way round if they are indicating flow direction ;)

Well, if the inlets/outlets are all 32mm as Octavian_P mentions then the part I linked in the original post will be a straight drop in replacement - cheap option at £32 :-)

Hi, just in case anybody stumbles on the thread like I did I have just removed my thermostat bypass and can confirm all inlets and outlets are 32mm so the replacement link at the top looks like a good buy as Fords quoted me £126.
I have just tested mine by standing it on the side of the sink and pouring boiling water into the top, it comes out of the side port initially but after about 10 seconds it came out the bottom so it looks like mine is ok.
I removed mine as the engine overheated, the problem I have is that I have just brought the car and it drove lovely around the streets the on the motorway on the way home the heaters went cold and the gauge went up, I pulled over and it cut out, after it cooled down it started fine, engine sounds lovely but once warm with the expansion tank cap off it blows most of the coolant out of the top.
Now it may have a small leak at the top of the rad but I don't want to start spending out if there is another issue and I can't think why it would blow the coolant out like that unless there was a blockage somewhere.
If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

I can confirm as Octavian has posted the BMW Wahler 3344.80 1 253 248. E30, Opening @ 80c is a working replacement. Fitted on three of mine without problems.

Thanks, the heater were working today before I drained the system but now the coolant is out I might backflush the system, there is a heater pipe at the back left of the engine so I might take that off and connect a hose up to it to flush it all through, I did think it was an airlock when it first happened so I might just find another radiator, replace the 3 way valve and refill the system with that heater pipe off until the coolant comes through so hopefully all the air will come out.

Don't know about the 24v, but with my 2.3 I found the problem was with coolant remaining in the matrix & air in the return pipe from it. Disconnecting the feed side & blowing all coolant out of the matrix when draining helps prevent this happening.
If coolant doesn’t appear at the feed hose when you fill the system, put a rag over the filler, put your thumb over the vent, block the other end of the pipe & blow through the rag until coolant appears. I usually put a funnel in the pipe so it doesn’t come over.

Even though your heater worked the matrix can break up internally & have a restricted flow.
After changing my matrix the problem of air locks went away, with the engine running you could hear air rushing through the matrix until it vented itself – never heard that with the old matrix.

Thanks for all the advise, I will have a go at flushing the matrix tomorrow, hopefully its not blocked as I can imagine that being a big job not like on my old MK1 granny 2 bolts and 2 hoses!. I have found a scorpio place near me called Spikes that has a radiator on their web site for £45 so I might buy that as I have good access to it at the moment and there is a slight leak on mine that isn't helping things.
Is there a diagram of the 24v coolant system somewhere so that I can see where all pipes are and what way the coolant flows, if I think there is a problem with the heater matrix I might be able to bypass it to prove that it is the problem then at least I will know for sure.

Replacing the heater matrix is one big job and not one to be undertaken lightly or unnecessarily. Have a look at this (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/matrix.htm) ::)
