Title: Rear Caliper Post by Tenfut on Sep 14th, 2011, 8:01pm Hi everyone I need to change rear o/s caliper soon, never done this before so looking for an "idiot sheet" or any tips / advice. Only changed pads before, never got involved with hydraulics. So, any special tools required, best method to bleed brakes ( 1,2,3 or all 4) or any other pointers? Thanks in advance Tony |

Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by gozz on Sep 14th, 2011, 9:45pm You will need to disconnect the handbrake cable under the centre of the car to get sufficient length to unhook it from the caliper,also bend the retaining clip up on the trailing arm to release the cable outer and give more 'wielding room' for the caliper.The piston needs to be screwed in clockwise whilst inward pressure is applied,well worth borrowing or buying a cheap wind back tool,your new caliper may be right in anyway,thus no need to wind it.Before you release the hydraulic hose,clamp it off then you will only need to bleed the one brake.When you fit the pads make sure the little 'nib' on the back of the one on the piston side fits into one of the indents in the piston. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by Andycan on Sep 14th, 2011, 10:43pm You can get the wind back tools on ebay. I got a set which fit most makes for around £15 but you are too far away from me to lend you mine. Andy |

Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by Simmo on Sep 15th, 2011, 8:16am Have a look at This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/brakesmanual.htm) and check out the 'buttons' on the left re the handbrake etc. ;) |

Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by Tenfut on Sep 15th, 2011, 3:32pm Thanks everyone So if the piston on the new one is flush with the body then I dont need the winding tool?? Tony |

Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by Simmo on Sep 15th, 2011, 6:00pm That would make sense.The crucial thing is can you get the pads in place and over the disc. If so you're ok. :) As for the wind back tool have a look at This (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0001K9V0E/ref=asc_df_B0001K9V0E4423278?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=B0001K9V0E). It is cheap, works a treat, just note it is 3/8 drive, and should be available at any Draper stockist locally to you. Need to check the price though. |

Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by Andycan on Sep 15th, 2011, 11:43pm Ebay is great for things if you can wait for them to be delivered. You might not need the wind back tool this time but you will need it when you change the pads in the future. |

Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by Tenfut on Nov 13th, 2011, 4:32pm Had a go at this earlier but could not find the handbrake adjuster. Is it not possible to change the caliper without accessing this? Tony |
||
Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by Simmo on Nov 13th, 2011, 5:09pm Answer NO. You need to release the adjuster to get enough slack on the h/brake cable to remove it. Follow the cable to the centre of the car and then you will need to unclip and bend down the metallic heat shield. There lurking under it you will find the adjuster mechanism !. ;) The layout...once you have located it...is shown in the links under Handbrake on the main page. |

Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by Tenfut on Nov 13th, 2011, 6:01pm Ok, thanks When you say centre of car would that be roughly in line with the centre pillars. Are the heat shield clips re-usable or are new ones required? Mines a 24v does that make a difference? Tony |

Title: Re: Rear Caliper Post by Simmo on Nov 14th, 2011, 7:24am I would say it is further back, under the rear seats ? just follow the cable. The clips on mine, a 2ltr estate, just bend enough to allow the shield to be pulled down. Having done that and released the adjuster you may find the cable is still reluctant to free off at the caliper. That's because there is a very stiff 'sheath' which protects the cable as it passes through the rear subframe and you need to bend/wriggle that to get the free movement. :) If you go to the 'page' in my first post and scroll down to handbrake cable replace you'll get an idea of how it is routed. |
