Title: Manual to auto Post by lleewar on Nov 11th, 2011, 7:49pm Hi Guys, Need your advice. I'm assuming that it can be done, but what type of job is it to change a manual to an auto?? Is it worth it or should the manual stay as it is?. Is the manual good in a 2.0? Your advice would be really helpful and could depend on me purchasing a manual. Cheers Lee |

Title: Re: Manual to auto Post by Stixy on Nov 11th, 2011, 9:37pm Ive converted 1 , If you have another engine/autobox ready to go in its basicaly below but if your fitting a autobox to a manual engine its a bit more involved exhaust off heatsheilds off rad engine & box prop out if it comes out the top bonnet off and crosmember brace off if your droping it out the bottom leave it all on the crosmember with the steering rack but split it at the balljoints and track rod ends leaving the front legs in situ dash out passenger seat out ( selector loom runs under it ) full engine loom swap fit selector lever pedal box swap passenger seat back in dash back in plug clutch feed on brake master cylinder my manual had a 3 piece prop so i had to cut the extra mounts out the tunnel as the auto prop wont fit while they are fitted Auto crosmember uses different threads in the tunnel clean them first it saves grief afterwards rad engine box & prop in exhaust and sheilds back on wire & pipe up fair bit of work but my legs arnt a lot of good and i need an auto |

Title: Re: Manual to auto Post by Matt on Nov 11th, 2011, 10:43pm It would probs be cheaper to buy an auto If your planning to use the proper auto box youll also need the ecu from an auto to make the box work and for the correct engine mapping as autos run a bit differently , and the radiator for the oil cooler The prop on the autos is shorter because the boxes are longer Its a lot more work converting to auto then it is the othet way round. I like the manuals, better fuel consumption on motorways and less to go wrong |

Title: Re: Manual to auto Post by lleewar on Nov 12th, 2011, 12:33am Stixy, thanks for the write up. It's quite involved. Matt, If I found a good manual, would it be a good buy, would you recommend them as good as or equal to an auto? Cheers Lee |

Title: Re: Manual to auto Post by Dave2302 on Nov 12th, 2011, 9:54am Same as any car Lee, Auto is great if you do lots of town driving, but will always be a tad thirstier than a manual. I've done a fair few Auto to Manual conversions and vice versa, and it's never an easy conversion. The only way to do it is to buy an identical car, with the box type you want and then you will have ALL the correct parts, but the Scorpio is not an easy car to be changing wiring looms etc ;) I'd just find a nice car with the right gearbox if i were you ;) HTH Dave |

Title: Re: Manual to auto Post by a900one on Nov 16th, 2011, 10:23pm A auto is less stressfull to drive than a manual, I had a heart monitor on once and drove a caviler sri and then a granada scorpio on the same route and at each junction my heart rate 10 bpm less in the auto. Just thought I would put that :-/ |
