My car is a 24v Ultima which has covered 96,000 miles. During November last year we went to an arboretum at Arley and entered the grounds over a cattle grid. The exit also had a grid but the bar spacing of the grid was such that the road wheels were either between or on top of the bars so that the car was bounced violently. In retrospect a fast exit would have been smoother. On leaving the park the anti-lock brake lights illuminated. I stopped the car for a few minutes and resumed my journey, however the lights reappeared. Over the next few weeks the fault seemed to self-cure with only very occasional warnings.
But for the fact that the wind blew over a large tree in our back garden I had intended driving to Devon (200 miles).
After removing the tree and replacing fence panels I checked my car prior to the M.O.T. and found sideways movement on the N.S. rear wheel due to a loose central hub nut.
My torque wrench does not read to the required rear hub setting of 290 newton metres; however a local tyre supplier checked the settings for my car including 420 newton metres for the front.
The cattle grid may not have caused the problem but how often do these nuts get checked?

Thanks for posting, I think it's useful to share such experiences: will check mine. This is something that happens in the aircraft industry - if a fault is detected by an airline the manufacturer gets informed and a tech bulletin might be issued to all operators.
I'd get onto Ford... :P

You need to keep an eye on it.
Bearing failure can cause it to come loose.
Apart from that it may well have got damaged from being driven whilst loose.
Given that Scorpio rear bearings can fail dramatically without obvious warning I’d replace mine if I found it loose.

I replaced my n/s rear wheelbearing twice in 2 years.
First time was a rumbling noise, 2nd time the was a 'bang' following by an intermittent grinding noise - fortunately I was only a mile or so from home, so drove it very carefully back but I wouldn't have wanted to drive it much further. Dismantled it and found the hub and bearing carrier were badly chipped - the bearing had broken up. Fortunately I had some spares in the shed ;D
After torquing the nut up mark it with a dab of paint - then its easy to check if it has moved by just removing the hubcap.

The use of the "STRONG" thread lock compound is advised, and I reported this a long time ago when i did my first one, and did the write up. If you use it especially on the nearside one it does prevent a lot of problems as that has a tendency to unscrew as the threads are not left and right handed.

He forgot to mention that it took three days,two boxes of sandwiches and several Thermos brews to locate them ;D
