Title: Tyre wear.
Post by exaktaman on Jan 23rd, 2012, 7:58pm
hi, I Have tyre wear on the inside edges of both front tyres. What, besides tracking, could cause this?

Wheel alignment, it's towing-out.   It could be a suspension problem, but if it was it normally starts a side at a time.   Wheel Alignment would be your first port of call.   Get a garage with a City and Guilds mechanic to check it properly, Kwik Fit and the likes just use lasers and idiot equipment.   Manual is best.

Had the tracking check at a trusted tyre specialst. Tracking OK. Suggests bottom suspension bushes.
Are these readily available? Is it a big job to change them?
I'm going to ask a pal of mine ti fit them.

Have a read of This article (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/wishbone.htm). You'll see that IF the ball joint in the wishbone has gone then you'll need the entire unit.   :(

Try to get the tyre specialist to tell you which bushes have gone. If it is the lower ball joint as Simmo say's then it,s a wishbone replacement job, easy enough to do. If it's the other two larger bushes then they are replaceable and available. :)  Lee

All bushings check out OK - no play anywhere!

Where can I find the specs for front wheel alignment?

Would four wheel laser alignment be worth considering?

Help please!

Have a look at "Front Suspension Specifications" here:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/suspensionman.htm

To test the rearward bush put your foot on top of a front tyre and push as if trying to rotate the wheel, if the wheel attempts to turn (steer) then the bush probably needs replacing. Repeat for the other wheel.

If replacing the bush don’t tighten the centre nut until the weight of the car is on the wheels.

I don't want to seem a GIT.   But I now have Two new front wishbones, complete with bushes, and new nuts and bolts, ready to fit this Easter, call me a 'gloater' but I can't help being a bit pleased!    ;D   I have no uneven wear on any of my tyres.   :D

Oh, and yes, my wishbones were delivered to my Northern Scotland address for £163.50 the pair!   From Germany.

FWIW my mechanic mate reckons inside scrubbing can also be caused by going around roundabouts a lot. I had the same happen a while back and there's a lot of roundabouts around here. Speshly if you do it quickly, seems feasible to me in that case. And you can't hang about on some of our roundabouts! ;D If have to go anywhere from home it's straight onto dual carriageway and roundabouts

Mike H - you could well be right here. I've developed a childish habit of putting the old foot down on roundabouts (I am after all a pensioner) when some young girlie is hanging on to my bumper and then watching her 'going backwards' in the rearview mirror. Of course they always come hurtling up to regain their position five feet off my rear end!
