Title: heated front windscreen Post by moonstersi on Jan 30th, 2012, 7:18pm About 3 strips work on my front windscreen now, is there a simple fix or is it totaly useless? |

Title: Re: heated front windscreen Post by Scorpio_Mike on Jan 30th, 2012, 8:43pm They do fail over time... If you have windscreen insurance and the screen has a crack in it I don't think it matters if the heated element works or not as to wether they will pay for a replacement. |

Title: Re: heated front windscreen Post by Tompion on Jan 30th, 2012, 10:31pm You could try cleaning the connectors the feeds are easy enough but you have drill out the pop rivets on the side trims to get at the earths which are near the top corners. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/windows/windscreen.pdf |

Title: Re: heated front windscreen Post by retiredjames on Feb 3rd, 2012, 9:04am I have checked the website given by Tompion. This shows details for a 95 model, ie one connector in each corner of the screen. Am I correct in thinking that the 98 Facelift model has two connectors either side of the bottom of the windscreen? Has anyone, please, any idea of what current is drawn by the heated windscreen? My screen is only working on one side - unfortunately the passenger side but since my wife usually drives from that position anyway it doesn't really cause too much of a problem!! Cheers, James |

Title: Re: heated front windscreen Post by Tompion on Feb 3rd, 2012, 2:40pm You need to check it again, it says "Disconnect the four heated windscreen connectors (two each side)." ;) |

Title: Re: heated front windscreen Post by retiredjames on Feb 3rd, 2012, 5:32pm Re Mike H's response - this info came from observation under the bonnet. There are two wires coming out of the off side bottom of the screen and two wires coming out of the nearside bottom of the screen. I can't see any wires at the top of the screen. Cheers James |

The PDF is correct, the 2 wires (1 each side) that you can see with connectors are +. The other 2 wires (1 each side) are earths, their connectors are at the top of the screen but you can’t see the connections unless you take off the side trims by drilling out the rivets. You have to lift the side rubber seal to see the trims. The 2 wires on the driver’s side are for that side of the screen & the 2 wires the other side are for the other half of the screen. ----------------------- The bottom of the rubber seal clips into the trim: http://i.imgur.com/LDGdx17.jpg The seal pulled from the trim & the rivets drilled: http://i.imgur.com/9H1uden.jpg With the trim removed one of the earth terminals can be seen at the top of the screen: http://i.imgur.com/M34ET94.jpg |

Title: Re: heated front windscreen Post by PJDavis on Feb 4th, 2012, 9:51am Those are very useful photos Tomp'. I wonder if they could be posted into the 'How-To' section so that if any of us needs to get a screen fitted, at least if we are at home we can show the 'fitter'. (especially if he/she hasn't experienced a Scorpio before) |

Title: Re: heated front windscreen Post by Tompion on Feb 4th, 2012, 2:39pm I’ll put some details in the 'How-To' section later. on 02/03/12 at 09:04:39, retiredjames wrote:
With engine & windscreen on, tested on my recently fitted screen it’s 14 amps per side. The resistance measured engine off between a positive windscreen terminal and battery earth was 1.4 ohms per side. |

Title: Re: heated front windscreen Post by retiredjames on Feb 6th, 2012, 8:38am Many thanks to Tompion for his information and photos. I never thought that the top connection would be hidden away where you cannot easily get at it to test. I think my screen will have to remain 50% serviceable and hope for warmer weather soon! The details on current and resistance are most useful. Thanks again. James |

Title: Re: heated front windscreen Post by Mike H on Feb 6th, 2012, 12:02pm Yep very good photos ;D - OK so the 2 wires per side are + & – (earth) for each half - may possiblee trace them back or get connection to them somehow to see if A. got 12V across them; or B. filament resistance? What I mean is, may not be the screen is faulty, but something else further back up the line, i.e. bad wire connection. |
